I had an unbelievable time up in Canada. I've known some of these dancers since the audition tour so it was really emotional to see them up on the stage. It's always so great to be a part of the very first season -- there's an energy and excitement that I just love.
I think the vibe up here is similar to the U.S. show. The choreographers are great and the dancers are really performing at a high level. A lot of the partnerships are fantastic as well. I think it's going to be a little rough when they get split up in a few weeks. Getting used to a partner is tough and then once you do get to know one another, you really get the best work done together.
As a ballroom dancer, I've worked a lot with partners. For some pairs, the chemistry just comes naturally, but for others, it's a challenge. It helps if at least one of the pair has had a sibling. It just aids negotiations.
My advice to all couples is to take some time and sit down and really talk through their approach -- what's working, what's not and be able to phrase it in a way that avoids blaming the other person.
These are extreme and intense times to go in and have to learn choreography so quickly. It's important to sit back every now and then and communicate, making sure both partners are really being respectful.
Performance days are always so great -- I wake up all excited to see who got which choreographer, what the music's going to be, if the underdogs pull through, who nails their routine. But I'm never excited for Thursday shows. I wake up in the morning and just feel it in my body. It's the hardest job of all. I don't want to say goodbye to any of these dancers.
