Liam Chang: Il chante bien !

Joshua Grant: J’aime bien…

Emotion, talent and Britney covers fill episode 2

Updated Wed. Jun. 13 2007 12:33 AM ET

Eye on Idol

Hopefuls from Vancouver, Montréal, Saskatoon and Calgary got their chance to shine on Canadian Idol, which found graceless gyrations, squealing sopranos and countless bad Britney imitations for the show's second and final audition episode.

Montréal

Canada's hub of music activity showed no less promise this year, providing an endlessly entertaining array of the talented and the not-so-astute.

From Fergie-wannabe Lil' Miss Vickie and the charmingly oblivious Bruno Poitras (thrilled to be singing to judges "Susan" and "Jack") to the capable but timid Kira Lina and singing primary school teacher Ben Griffin, Montréal truly did provide from all points on the singing spectrum.

First up was 17-year-old Maxime Tremblay accompanied by host Ben Mulroney, who acted as the francophone's translator. Tremblay swayed his way into the judges hearts, his arms dangling loosely while his torso swung violently from side to side.

The amazed looks on the faces on the panel showed they liked his moves but didn't quite think he was ready to move to the next round.

"Never invite me into this room again," said a traumatized Mulroney after the audition was over.

Much more promising was when 28-year-old teacher Ben Griffin showed up to audition, leaving his adorable class of pint-sized fans so he could visit the Idol judges.

After winning them over with his genuine personality and easy-going delivery of "Beast of Burden," he was able to return to his class and share the victory with his students.

"Hey! Look what I won," he exclaimed before being mobbed with a group hug. ""I'm going to Toronto! There's going to be a substitute teacher. Please don't do what you did to the last one."

The last gold ticket of the day went to Gaspé resident Jessyka Lapierre, 18. Speaking in broken but studied English, she explained she was determined to get better at the language but preferred to do her song in French.

"Why haven't you done anything?" said judge Zack Werner, clearly impressed with her strong pipes.

"I really don't know where to go," Lapierre replied. "I haven't had the chance."

"Well, the fact that you haven't is your loss and Canadian Idol's gain," Werner told her.

Vancouver

The land of the laid-back produced its own unique crop of characters, including a guy who called himself "Strings" but wasn't particularly good at playing guitar, an emo kid whose song of choice was by the Drifters, a girl who auditioned with her snake and bird and last year's Top 22 competitor Greg Neufeld (yes, he earned another gold ticket).

Then came Samuel Liu, 22, the only competitor of the entire season to bring an erhu (a Chinese precursor to the violin) to his audition. And while his playing was divine, it was his singing that really got to the judges -- particularly an emotion-packed version of Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You."

It was a performance showcasing the deep agony of the song: he whimpered; he clenched his fists; he punched the air. It all ended with Liu on his knees, cowering from the pain of never straying too far from the sidewalk (as the songs says).

"That was quite impassioned," noted judge Jake Gold.

Then came Samuel's antithesis, the Pain from the Ukraine: Sergiy Zakharov. His monotonous drone permeated the Backstreet Boys' "Incomplete," his mouth barely moving as he forced out the words. At least he was fair when the judges asked how he thought he had done.

"I think I did better when I came in and went from better to being worse," he said, adding a message to current Canadian Idol Eva Avila as he left the room. "Hopefully one day I'll be right next to you, standing next to you."

Saskatoon

The Prairies brought out the rockers, and many who saw themselves as rockers but heard differently from the judges. There was 19-year-old Nathan Groot, who serenaded them with the music of the night; Jennifer Kunitz, who is not a singer but auditioned because she likes the show; and twin sisters who -- according to Zack -- belonged on the "country cruise ship from Hell."

Fortunately, there were also performers like Ryan Langlois, 28, a gas fitter and number one dad who wanted an opportunity to live his musical dream.

"I'm a dad, number one in my life is trying to be a good dad and a good husband and I use my music as an extension of that," he told the cameras on a visit to his house. "My whole life I've been too scared to try anything... I'm kind of fed up with that."

His version of Sting's "Fields of Gold" gave him the opportunity he was looking for with a gold ticket to the next round in Toronto.

Another classic rocker that pleased the panel (minus Zack) was 20-year-old Joshua Grant, the singer in a band called Straight Faced Liars. His initial singing impressed Sass and Jake, but it took the last line of O Canada to win over Farley and get his gold ticket.

London

It had been two years since Canadian Idol had touched down in London and you could tell. The singers in that city were pent up and ready for action, putting on a big show with their talent, their antics, and particularly in the case of the pouffy-maned Sergio Fazari, their hair.

After bantering with Norm Fraser over whether he was attractive enough to be on the show the judges were treated to a fiddle and step-dance show by Sam Romijn and a boy named Josh who appeared to be his younger brother.

But what could have been just an attention grab materialized into the real thing when the geeky-looking Romijn proved he could sing as well as he could fiddle.

"Is this a thing, or are you just a complete schmoe?" asked Werner.

"Define Schmoe," the confident 16-year-old responded, which somehow impressed the judge enough to cast his vote.

"I'm a definite yes," Werner decided.

Then there was 18-year-old Sharon McCracken, a singer whose friends and family had compared her to Whitney Houston and Toni Braxton. When she stepped into the audition room, she lived up to her goal of singing like nobody other than herself with version of "I Will Always Love You" that played on the ears much like the sound of a baby crying.

"You're the first person who's been absolutely correct, you sound nothing like Whitney Houston," Farley Flex assured her.

She seemed fine with their analysis until after she left the room.

"They said I totally suck, 'you can't sing,'" the Bohemian-braided singer shot at the cameras. "I've got news for them. They'll see me in a few years and I'll be on TV."

With the auditions said and done, 198 talented singers head to Toronto to participate in a week-long music boot camp. More will be eliminated each day, leaving 22 to compete on the show's live episodes.

See the first half of the Top 200 week on Monday, June 18 at 8 p.m. ET on CTV.
