LAKE AINSLIE — Tyler Mullendore is one week and one performance away from cracking the Canadian Idol Top 10.

And his family, friends and home community couldn’t be prouder.

The 19-year-old Lake Ainslie native performed Monday night on Canadian Idol and learned during Wednesday night’s results show he had garnered enough votes to make the Top 14.

Four more contestants — two females and two males — will be eliminated following next week’s performances and the Top 10 will remain. Mullendore will take the Idol stage again Monday at 10 p.m. on CTV.

Mullendore’s aunt, Marilyn MacDonald, who has a large sign in support of her nephew on display in Whycocomagh at the Bayside Cafe and Garden Centre (which she co-owns), said the community is getting caught up in the Idol excitement.

“I have lived in this community all my life and I’ve never, ever seen the community abuzz with anything ever like this,” she said, noting it’s extending across the island. “We’re seeing signs in Port Hawkesbury and into Baddeck and so it’s spreading farther. People are very supportive.”

Mullendore returned to Cape Breton last week from Toronto to shoot material for the show and was greeted by a jam-packed crowd of family, friends and fans at the Lions hall.

MacDonald noted several local community groups are having posters and pins made in support of Mullendore, some of which include his now famous ‘I seen ‘er buddy’ comment from the televised Canadian Idol auditions.

“It’s beyond exciting. We are all so proud of him,” said MacDonald. “I come from a large family and Tyler’s been playing music since he was a little boy and we’ve watched him develop and grow not only as a musician, but as a very, very fine young person. Ever since he was a little kid he wanted to be a star. He always said he was going to be a star.”

Mullendore and West Pubnico’s Dwight d’Eon are the lone Nova Scotians in the Top 14.
