Rihanna, Avril Lavigne and Maroon 5 to perform on Idol

Canadian Idol competitors don't just aspire to Top 10 because it means they're closer to the winning spot and get to perform to a large crowd in the lavish John Bassett Theatre. One of the biggest perks of membership in the elite group is the chance to learn from some of the biggest stars in music today.

The only difference is that this year the show has the best list of guests it has ever seen.

Mega-stars in this year's line-up include teen diva Rihanna (who kicks off the Top 10, performing her massive hit "Umbrella" show on Wednesday, July 18), Canadian sensation Avril Lavigne, flamboyant popster Mika and Grammy winners Maroon 5.

"We love Canada and our Canadian fans and are really looking forward to performing on Canadian Idol," said a statement issued by Maroon 5 on July 12, the day CTV announced the guests.

Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor will also spend some time in workshops with the competitors, sharing their extensive musical and performance know-how during a theme week centered around the music of Queen.

Also included in the Top 10 themes announced by CTV was a new "People's Choice" theme which will see viewers choose songs for the competitors.

"What a line-up!" said Susanne Boyce, CTV president of programming. "It's a great compliment to the Canadian Idol team that artists such as these wish to perform on Canada's No. 1 summer TV event."

Each week's unique theme will be accompanied by a special workshop, giving the competitors the opportunity to learn from a new crop of some of the world's most accomplished musical acts. Then, on each results episode, the special guest stars will take to the Canadian Idol stage to show them how it's done.

Also on this summer's bill are former Canadian Idol champions Kalan Porter and Eva Avila - giving the current competitors a chance to see just how far Canadian

"We are flattered to have been approached by some of the world's top artists to appear on Canadian Idol," said executive producer John Brunton. "Stay tuned for more exciting announcements to come!"

The spectacular programme delivers just what fans were expecting after last year's star-studded Top 10, where guests included Cyndi Lauper, Nelly Furtado, Martina McBride and the legendary Tony Bennett, who went on to appear a year later on this season's American Idol.

The 2007 Canadian Idol Themes and Guest Stars (subject to change):

Top 10
Tuesday, July 17 @ 8 p.m. ET/PT (90 minutes) - "No. 1 Hits"
Wednesday, July 18 @ 9:30 p.m. ET/PT - Rihanna

Barbados-born Rihanna, 19, has landed in the No. 1 position with singles from each of her three albums. Her current hit "Umbrella" is sitting in the No. 1 spot of Billboard's Hot 100 list. Rihanna will appear in Wednesday's episode as she answers questions from the Canadian Idol Top 10 and shares her secrets on landing No. 1 songs on the charts before performing her hit song "Umbrella."

Top 9
Monday, July 23 @ 9 p.m. ET/PT - "The Music of the Sixties"
Tuesday, July 24 @ 9:30 p.m. ET/PT

Tuesday night's results episode will feature a special surprise performance and announcement in association with the "Help the Idols Build a House" charitable initiative.

Top 8
Monday, July 30 @ 9 p.m. ET/PT - "Unplugged"
Tuesday, July 31 @ 9:30 p.m. ET/PT - Enrique Iglesias

The Top 8 competitors will have the opportunity to workshop with Enrique Iglesias in preparation for the Top 8 "Unplugged" episode on July 30. On July 31, Iglesias will perform two songs from his new release Insomniac from Interscope/Universal Music Canada on the Canadian Idol stage.

Top 7
Monday, August 6 @ 9 p.m. ET/PT - "We Will Rock You: The Music of Queen"
Tuesday, August 7 @ 9:30 p.m. ET/PT - Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen

The Top 7 competitors will workshop with Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor on the set of the hit musical "We Will Rock You," rehearsing with the nine-piece rock band that backs the Queen-themed production. Then, the Top 7 will join May and Taylor and some of the cast of "We Will Rock You" on stage for the musical's show-stopping finale. On Tuesday's show, "We Will Rock You" star Yvan Pedneault will perform with the Top 7 on the Canadian Idol stage.

Top 6
Monday, August 13 @ 9 p.m. ET/PT - "Pop Rock"
Tuesday, August 14 @ 9:30 p.m. ET/PT - Maroon 5

Maroon 5 will appear in Monday's show providing advice to the Top 6 and commenting on their "Pop Rock" song selections before performing live in Tuesday's episode. Following the release of their quadruple platinum-selling debut album Songs About Jane, Maroon 5 have returned after four years with their follow-up album It Won't Be Soon Before Long.

Top 5
Monday, August 20 @ 9 p.m. ET/PT - "My Own Idol"

Tuesday, August 21 @ 9:30 p.m. ET/PT - Kelly Clarkson
The show's Top 5 competitors will be getting a visit from Idol royalty when first-ever American Idol Kelly Clarkson stops in for coaching sessions and a live performance.

Clarkson, who is now promoting her third album, will appear on the show's Aug. 20/21 "My Own Idol" episodes. Mentored by the hazel-eyed starlet, members of the Top 5 will perform songs by their musical heroes on Aug. 20 and Clarkson will take to the stage August 21 to perform on the results show.

The pillar of what can happen when undiscovered artists get their start through a show like Idol, Clarkson found tremendous success with her debut album Thankful in 2003 as well as its follow-up, 2004's Breakaway. Her second album sold 6 million copies in the U.S. and 11 million worldwide.

Clarkson's most recent effort, My December, is a very personal album that defied expectations, introducing an artist coming into her powerful, distinctive vocals. Since winning her American Idol title six years ago, she has earned two Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, a People's Choice Award and a staggering 11 Billboard Music Awards.

Top 4
Monday, August 27 @ 9 p.m. ET/PT - "Standard Week"
Tuesday, August 28 @ 8 p.m. ET/PT - Paul Anka

Paul Anka will visit Canadian Idol on August 27 and 28, joining the Top 4 for standards week. With 50 years in show business and multiple international hits, the music legend is the perfect person to coach the young vocalists in taking on fame at a young age.

Often considered the very first Canadian idol, Anka recorded his first single, "I Confess," when he was 14 years old. At age 16, he released what would be one of his best-known songs of all time, "Diana." Written about a babysitter he'd had a crush on, the song remains an international hit and oldies staple.

During his time on the show, Anka will mentor the competitors as they prepare to sing the classics before taking the stage himself to perform a song from his upcoming release, "Classic Songs, My Way." The album will be released Sept. 4 and is a collection of Anka's favourite songs featuring a duet with Anka's protégé, Michael Bublé.

The CD also features a new version of Anka's instant classic "My Way," which hit the top of the charts for blue-eyed crooner Frank Sinatra in 1969.

Anka has a staggering 900 songs to his credit. Over one hundred of his songs have been recorded by other artists including Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt and Robbie Williams. His Billboard chart statistics include three number one songs: "Diana," "Lonely Boy," and "You're Having My Baby," as well as twenty-two Top 20 hits.

In addition to being nominated for an Academy Award for "The Longest Day," Anka was honoured in 2005 when he awarded the prestigious Order of Canada, recognizing his lifetime achievements and contributions to people in all sectors of Canadian society. He is also a proud inductee to Canada's Walk of Fame.

British sensation Mika, who was originally scheduled to appear during Top 4 week, has bowed out of Canadian Idol due to illness. The show has yet to entertain guests Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson and Eva Avila, as well as an additional superstar guest to be announced soon.

Top 3
Monday, September 3 @ 9 p.m. ET/PT - "Judge's Choice/People's Choice"
Tuesday, September 4 @ 8 p.m. ET/PT - Kalan Porter

Each member of the Top 3 will perform two songs each on Monday night - one chosen by Canadian Idol's four-member judging panel, and for the first time ever, the other chosen by Canadian Idol viewers in an online poll. One week after his sophomore album Wake Up Living is released, 2005 champion Kalan Porter returns to the Canadian Idol stage on Tuesday's results episode.

Top 2
Monday, September 10 @ 9 p.m. ET/PT - "Finale"
Tuesday, September 11 @ 8:30 p.m. ET/PT - Avril Lavigne, Eva Avila & others

The final two standing after a nine-month journey in search of the next Canadian Idol each perform three songs on Monday night's final performance episode. Each will perform the fifth Canadian Idol single, which will be released Wednesday morning to radio stations across the country. On Tuesday night's expanded, 90-minute results episode, the Canadian Idol Top 10 return to perform with the two finalists, along with a series of special guest stars, including Avril Lavigne, Eva Avila and a superstar to be announced later this summer.

Beginning Tuesday, July 17, Canadian Idol will be broadcast live from Toronto's John Bassett Theatre with an audience of over 1,000 fans. Tickets to performance shows on Monday and results episodes on Tuesday are available to the general public through Ticketmaster for $5.00 per ticket (maximum four per order). Tickets are available at 12 noon ET on the Monday two weeks prior to each show.

J'adore le country moi aussi!  S'ils en font au top 5, je me demande si Jaydee et Tara vont pouvoir se rendre jusque là.  Des fois, ça prend juste une mauvaise semaine pour se faire flusher.
