Citation :Idol Chartwatch, November 6: Ruben’s CD Falls off the Top Ten
by Donna Reynolds -- 11/06/2006
This week, a soundtrack from a children’s TV show blew everyone else away, and certainly didn’t help our Idols. Ruben’s The Return had a particularly dismal second week, and most of the other Idol-related albums fell rather dramatically as well. Where did they end up? Read on to find out.

Hannah Montana, the soundtrack from the popular kids’ TV show, kicked everyone’s butt this week, selling 271,238 copies to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200. John Legend’s Once Again and My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade were neck and neck with My Chemical Romance slipping into second place. No one else was even close!

As for our Idols, it doesn’t look good for Ruben. In its second week, The Return sold only 25,564 copies, a decrease of 63 percent. The album tumbled to #35 on the Top 200 and was #10 on the R&B/Hip-Hop list. This brings his total sales for two weeks to just under 95,000 copies. I’m disappointed, actually. The Return is much better than Soulful. Ruben’s voice has matured and there are some really nice tracks on this CD. It’s a tough market, though. Maybe he just waited too long.

Carrie Underwood’s Some Hearts remained #22 on the Billboard 200 and sales for the album were up 6 percent. It was #4 on the Country chart. Carrie’s doing very well. Don’t forget to watch the Country Music Association (CMA) awards show on Monday (November 6) (8:00 p.m. on CMT). Carrie is up for four awards, including female vocalist of the year, song and video of the year for “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” and the Horizon award (best new artist).

Clay’s A Thousand Different Ways dropped 30 spots from #52 to #82 on the Billboard 200. This represents a 37 percent drop in sales this week. There is some good news, however. I understand that the CD has been certified platinum based on initial shipments rather than sales. Hopefully, the remaining 150,000 or so will sell out, and he can at least have a legitimate gold album out of this.

Here’s how the rest of the Idol-related albums charted this week:

   * Kelly Clarkson’s Breakaway was #184 on the Billboard 200 in its 100th week on the charts.
   * Miranda Lambert’s Kerosene was #72 on the Country chart.
   * Now That’s What I Call Music #22 (Now 22) featuring Kelly Clarkson’s “Walk Away,” along with Nick Lachey’s “What’s Left of Me,” Teddy Geiger’s (from The New Partridge Family) “For You I Will (Confidence),” Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day,” and K.T. Tunstall’s “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” was #49 on the Billboard 200, and retained the #1 spot on the Compilation chart. FYI.
   * Now That’s What I Call Music #21 (Now 21) featuring Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You” was #6 on the Compilation chart 6.
   * Wow Gospel 2006 featuring George Huff’s “Brighter Day” was #25 on the Top Compilation chart and #14 on the Gospel listing.
   * The Gospel featuring Tamyra Gray’s “Now Behold the Lamb” was #34 on the Gospel chart.

This Week’s Idols’ Singles’ Charts

Despite weak album sales, Ruben’s single, “Change Me,” had another great week. It debuted on the Hot 100 Airplay chart (#70), and remains on the Bubbling Under listing. It was #24 on both the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Singles and Airplay Charts, and #2 on the R&B Adult airplay list.

Carrie’s single, “Before He Cheats,” hit #1 on the country chart (Greatest Gainer), giving Carrie the distinction of being the 100th Idol to have a #1 single. “Before He Cheats” was #25 on the Hot 100, #26 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, #48 on the Pop 100, #28 on Hot Digital Tracks, and #27 on Hot Digital Songs.

Kellie Pickler’s “Red High Heels” dropped two spots to #39 on the Country chart, and Josh Gracin’s “I Keep Coming Back” was #58 on the same list.

Mario Vazquez continues to move up the charts. “Gallery” was #35 on the Hot 100, #30 on the Hot 100 Airplay, #15 on the Pop 100, and #9 on the Pop 100 Airplay chart. It also turned up on the Hot Digital Songs list (#48) and the Hot Digital Tracks chart (#45).

Here’s how the rest of the Idol singles did this week:

   * Taylor’s “Do I Make You Proud” / “Takin’ it to the Streets” was up one spot to #5 on the Single Sales chart.
   * Katharine McPhee’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” / “My Destiny” was up one spot to #6 on the Single Sales chart this week.
   * Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You” was #9 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

Upcoming Idol Releases

Next week, we’ll see where Kellie Pickler’s Small Town Girl debuted. I think this one is going to surprise a lot of people. The reviews have been remarkably good, and Kellie has been enchanting in her promotional interviews. She will certainly open very strong on the country chart, and I think these interviews and performances are going to spur additional sales. Small Town Girl just might hit the 100,000 mark in its first week.

I really like this CD. The songs are fresh and reflective of her personality and life experiences. Kellie calls the album an “open book,” and some of the tracks are very personal. “I Wonder,” which she wrote about her long-absent mother, will rip your heart out. Kellie’s voice is distinctive, and while the album is definitely country, there’s a nice little pop/rock edge to it that could give it some cross-over potential. Hey, I bought it, and I don’t really like country. Be sure to check out her emotional interview on CNN.com.

Kellie will be competing for chart position with Barry Manilow (who I suspect will debut very high – maybe #1), Meat Loaf (top ten for sure), John Fogarty, and the Who, among others. Kevin Federline’s first CD was also released this week, but I doubt anyone has much to fear from him!

Upcoming Idol Releases

Next week is a pretty big week for Idol-related music. Season 2’s Jon Peter Lewis’ first album, Stories from Hollywood, drops on Tuesday. JPL will be performing at Crash Mansion in New York on November 4 at 6:00 p.m. He’ll also be a participant on a panel (“The American Idol Effect: A&R and Marketing in a World of Overnight Success”) for the College Music Journal (CMJ) Music Marathon earlier on Saturday.

Other Idol-related CDs include Andrea Bocelli’s Under the Desert Sky featuring a duet with Katharine McPhee (“Can’t Help Falling in Love”), Dionne Warwick’s Me and My Friends featuring a duet with Paris Bennett (“Then Came You”), and Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster is Loose with a track featuring Jennifer Hudson (“The Future Ain’t What it Used to Be”). Wow!
