Glendale 17-year-old Jordin Sparks continues her run on American Idol, and just as her musical talent evolves along the way, so does her style.
Friends describe Sparks' fashion sense as "trendy casual." She frequents stores like designer denim chain Buckle and Glendale's Haute C boutique off 67th Avenue and Loop 101.
But there is always room for help, especially when prepping for national TV.
Right after AI producers finalize their top-24 contestant list, they send in fashion consultants to transform the group of everyday Joes and Janes into made-for-TV stars.
Idol style consultant Miles Siggins works with starstyle.com and helps Jordin dress for each show. He said he grapples each week with having Jordin reflect her youth but also maintain a sophisticated, mature look.
He spoke about his approach recently with The Republic.
Question: Do Idol viewers' fashion criticisms posted on blogs or chat boards influence your style choices or the contestants'?
Answer: No, not at all. You can't believe everyone all the time - there are so many different opinions out there. At least those people are paying attention and taking the time to write. There is no bad press. People talking about you is a good thing.
Q: Because of Jordin's age, what challenges do you face as you help her make style choices?
A: We try to push the boundaries a bit, but we don't want to expose her or make her look too sexy. The thing is that because she's young, we obviously want to keep her looking young. Sometimes she picks out dresses that are older, but in general, the idea is to keep her looking young, like a teenager. I'm a big advocate of less is more, not showing so much skin. I've always been outspoken against stars like Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, who show a lot of skin or want to be very sexy when most of their fan following is young teenage girls.
Q: Jordin is a former plus-size model. Do you ever find it hard to stay creative while accommodating her size?
A: (Laughs) She's a Size 11 foot, that's the main challenge there. Sometimes it's hard to find jeans long enough to fit her - she's 6 feet tall. But she's not the biggest contestant on the show. There are a lot of cute plus-size clothes, and she used to model for Torrid. There are lots of choices out there for her.
Q: How has Jordin's background as a plus-size model helped her Idol fashion evolution?
A: She knows what suits her and what doesn't, what fits her and what doesn't. She knows what flatters her figure more than other people do.
Q: Do the producers make fashion recommendations? How much of a say do the contestants have in their style choices?
A: If there's something that the producers really don't like, they let me know. But they can't say no (to a contestant's choice) because it's a competition. In the end, it's the contestant's choice completely - we only advise them. We can strongly advise them, but in the end it is their choice.
Q: What image has Jordin expressed to you that she's going for?
A: Jordin's still kind of finding her look. She's still experimenting each week.
Q: What image do you see fitting Jordin well?
A: I like the fact that she's trying different things. I prefer that we keep her looking young, but she did look beautiful in the dress last week (a low-cut, sleeveless black dress). The hair team and I usually get together to complement what she's wearing.
Q: How would you describe Jordin's personal style?
A: Eclectic. Off the show, she's been very casual, but during the show very eclectic.
Q: What designers or brands has Jordin worn on the show so far?
A: We change it up every week, but she has worn Torrid, H&M, Karen Millen and others.
Q: Is it likely that Jordin will wear any Arizona designers' clothing while on Idol?
A: Probably not. We only get two hours a week to shop with the contestants. Sadly, we can't go to Arizona.
