What was scheduled to be a quiet morning at Sandra Day O'Connor High School became a frenzied celebration Friday to mark the homecoming of local American Idol contestant Jordin Sparks.
The Glendale teen was a student at the school until her sophomore year, when she left to become home-schooled and pursue a musical career.
Friday afternoon, the school held a rally to welcome the singer, who this week advanced as one of three remaining contestants on the talent show. An AI film crew taped the event as part of this Tuesday's show.

Phoenix police monitored the school throughout the day, a precaution the school took a few months ago when it welcomed its namesake, former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
Jordin entered the school gymnasium around 1:45 p.m., eagerly hugging former teachers and students before taking her place of honor on a makeshift stage.
"Hey guys, did you miss me?" she asked while pointing out and acknowledging friends.
Sparks sang two songs, Broken Wing and To Love Somebody, a Bee Gees song she performed on Tuesday's disco-themed Idol, drawing praise from its composer, Barry Gibb.
She also told classmates that next Tuesday, she will again sing I Who Have Nothing, a song she performed early on in the competition that got warm reviews from AI judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul.
Students in the bleachers chanted the 17-year-old's name and waved signs.
The densest poster-waving section was the corner where the school's drama club sat. When she attended Sandra Day O'Connor, Jordin was "a total drama kid," said the club director, Amanda Moore.
Later Friday (after deadline for The Glendale Republic), Jordin was scheduled to appear at Westgate City Center in Glendale for a welcome-home rally expected to draw thousands of fans. She was to be greeted by Mayor Elaine Scruggs and perform more songs.
Jordin has advanced farther than any other Arizona contestant on Idol. If she survives next week's round of voting, she'll enter the finals and be just one more round away from the American Idol crown and a major recording contract.
