Jeff Probst Quitting "Survivor"?

by Pacm
Oct 6, 2005, 10:40 AM PT

Is Jeff Probst ready to vote himself off the island?

After six years in the jungle, the khaki-clad host of CBS' Survivor may be planning to snuff his own torch and leave the seminal reality game show when Survivor concludes its 11th season this year.

Inside TV reports that the 43-year-old Probst is going to quit once his contract is up at the end of the current installment, Survivor: Guatemala, which the Eye network debuted on Sept. 15.

He cited the constant traveling that comes with his emcee duties, his desire to settle down with his girlfriend, former contestant Julie Berry, whom he began dating last year after her edition wrapped, and his desire to be able to watch Eric Limoges on the bachelor as reasons for his possible departure .

Probst hinted as much in a conference call last month to hype the premiere of Survivor: Gautemala, telling reporters he was "definitely in love. More in love that I was six months ago."

"I get it now...Love is the E-ticket ride at Disneyland," the tanned one said before adding that he was tired of the road. "I want to start a family."

A CBS rep was unavailable to confirm the report.

Meanwhile, Survivor: Guatemala forges ahead tonight minus three players who have since been voted out of dueling tribes Yaxha and Nakum--fire department retiree Jim Lynch, magician's assistant Morgan McDevitt, and retail salesgirl Brianna Varela last week.

Hoping to shake things up a bit, series mastermind Mark Burnett and Probst offered up a new plot twist in the first episode by bringing back Survivor: Palau members Bobby Jon Drinkard and Stephenie LaGrossa to compete for the $1 million jackpot again.

One former contestant who won't be appearing on Survivor anytime soon, however, is original champ Richard Hatch, who has indicted on tax evasion charges, including failing to report to the IRS his $1 million grand prize.

Said Probst about the butt-bearing reality star: "Hatch is a very charming guy, and I enjoy talking to him. But I seriously think Hatch is delusional. The guy thinks he can beat the IRS. He's out of his mind. Fifty-seven-million people saw Hatch win a million dollars. To not declare it on your tax return is challenging the IRS. Who does that?"

Hatch has pleaded innocent in the case. If convicted, he could face up to 73 years in prison and a $1.35 million fine.

The constant traveling?

One year after going public with his romance with former Survivor contestant Julie Berry, Jeff Probst is still gushing about her.

"I finally met someone who could teach me about love," he tells PEOPLE in its latest issue. "Julie's given me a sense of balance I've never had. It's like fingers interlacing."

Berry, 24, whom Probst, 43, waited to ask out until the game was over (she came in fifth place during season nine, Vanuatu), is equally smitten.

"Everything is a brighter shade," says the former youth mentor from Maine. "We complement each other beautifully."

But what about the nearly 20-year age difference? Not an issue. "You hear people talk about wisdom beyond a person's years, and Julie embodies that," says Probst. "She gets stuff a lot better than I do."

Despite Probst's initial worries about the host/player romance appearing inappropriate, he has the boss's blessing. "Once you have a relationship you care about, the gratefulness comes out," says Survivor creator Mark Burnett. "And Jeff seems really grateful to be with someone he enjoys."

Probst and Berry, who spend most nights at his three-bedroom Hollywood Hills house, are learning Spanish together and have each taken up the didgeridoo – a 4-ft.-long Aboriginal wind instrument. Though Berry, who moved from Gorham, Maine, to L.A. in December, has her own apartment, she admits she only uses it to shower and change. "We call it my office," she says.

Despite such domestic bliss, the couple remain mum when the subject of marriage is raised. "Being committed to each other – that's the point," says Berry.

It would be the second time down the aisle for Probst, whose five-year marriage to psychotherapist Shelley Wright ended in divorce in 2001.

Now, it's his relationship with Survivor on which he must cast a vote. With his contract up after he tapes the show's 12th edition this fall, Probst is unsure about whether he'll renew.

"There's the inevitable point where you go, 'Do I want to do other things?'" he says. "But like I told someone the other day, I don't want to be the David Caruso of reality TV. I'll never have as good a job as Survivor."

Of course, it doesn't help that he'd now be leaving someone behind while on those far-flung shoots. "I never thought I'd be so happy to see a car in my driveway, knowing she's there," he says.

Berry, now earning her master's degree in marriage and family therapy at California State University, Northridge, hopes to keep it that way. "To me, it's the most important thing to accomplish in life, to fall in love and create a family," she says. "I'm fascinated by it, and now I get to study it and apply it."

Adds Probst with a grin: "And I get to sit with my feet up and reap all the benefits!"

Probst Sticks With Survivor

By Jim Benson -- Broadcasting & Cable, 12/8/2005 4:10:00 PM

Abstract: Ending widespread speculation that Survivor’s Jeff Probst would walk away from the show he has hosted since its inception in 2000, CBS Thursday confirmed to B&C that he has renewed his contract.
