He was asked the same question about the crowd over and over; his answer was shortened.
He said they were great skaters for IJS; he said older ice dancers were trained more in ballroom style, not as acrobatic/technical
FWIW, I was present during Massimo's mixed zone comments, and I interpreted them differently. I also kept in mind English is not his first language.
He was asked repeatedly about the crowd influencing judges; the first time or two, he said, "No, No." I believe his good nature betrayed him, as he stood taking the question several more times before finally saying something like, "A great crowd can help skaters . . . I hope it doesn't affect the judges. . . some of them have been judging since 1970!" And I had a joke with him. The reporter also said the crowd in Canada was louder than in Turin, and Massimo said, "No, the Turin crowd was crazy too, believe me."
As for the rest of it, my take is Massimo was saying that Tessa and Scott fit the IJS better, than older ice dancers who were more trained on the floor to bring actual ballroom to the ice. He said they were great skaters and he couldn't argue the result, because this is the system.
I cannot emphasize enough the amount of time he stood taking questions and taking, all in good nature. He did not give any impression of being a poor sport.
I do not know what Max Shabalin said, however, I really felt compelled to post here that Massimo was truly taken out of context. Hopefully I won't get flamed but that's life.
