Citation :American Idol: Atlanta Auditions, Live Thoughts

American Idol holds its final true audition episode tonight, this time from Hotlanta. I've never been to Atlanta, but I presume it's often quite warm there. I know that Nelly comes from Atlanta and I've always had an explicable dislike of the city, most likely because of the Atlanta Braves and their despicable Tomahawk Chop I witnessed on TBS throughout the nineties. I picked the picture above because I liked that dress the young woman is wearing. It's very colorful. I have no idea whether we'll actually see her in tonight's episode. Tomorrow, FOX will air a special Best of the Rest audition episode, where FOX takes the best un-aired scraps from all the audition cities. It's filler until Hollywood week begins. We'll be here throughout the episode, giving live updates as the episode moves along.
Atlanta is the biggest city in the south, according to Seacrest. I was not aware.
Seacrest's parents show up - Atlanta is the man's home town. They seem amiable.
Joshua Jones works will glass. He's a glass blower and he loves it. He's floppy-haired dude, seems like a cool guy. He sings some Queen. He doesn't have a bad voice, but he does some weird stuff with his voice and some weird stuff with his eyes. The judges tell him to turn around and do it again. Paula and Randy say yes, Simon no. He's going to Hollywood.
JP Tjelemand auditioned in season 4 and sat next to Carrie Underwood as they were going to see the judges. He's still kicking himself for not befriending Carrie. JP is a nerd, though, and he didn't have a chance. Time for another go around. He should've stayed home. On a positive note, I like his outfit: pink t-shirt with a black long-sleeve underneath. He admits that he's majoring music in college. Yikes. Pretty lax admission standards wherever he's going.
We get a montage of Paula having a difficult time saying no. She's such a softie. This is some big time filler.
Asia'h Epperson is a small town country girl who loves to sing. Her speaking voice is raspy and I like raspy. I have high hopes. Holy Crap! This is a ridculously sad story. She called her father on the way up to the audition and told him he'd like him to be their with her. A half hour later, her brother called and told her that her dad died in a car crash. Thankfully, she's really good. She has a unique voice, powerful and in control. Paula cries, Simon gave her big ups and she's going to Hollywood.
Brooke Helvie is an eighteen year old blonde. She is currently Miss South Florida Fair. She's the cream of the carnie crop. She talks like a female Beavis, if that's something you're interested in. She also combs her hair a lot. These are things you should know. Surprisingly, she's a good singer. The judges are lukewarm, but give her three yeses. After she leaves, Simon calls her possibly the most annoying person in the world - he didn't want her to sing well. Couldn't have said it better, Cowell.
Bad sing-a-long of the night: "Glamorous" by Fergie, which is possibly the worst pop single of the last century. Fergie's popularity is plain offensive. She's the worst.
Eva Miller is an idiot who sings an unintelligible version of a Vanessa Carlton song. She actually might be drunk - Eva falls down during her performance. Simon is convinced that this was all a show, but it soon becomes clear that it wasn't. Either that, or she's a really good actor.
Alexandrea Lushington is up next and she's a young lady. She sings some Ella Fitzgerald, She's 16 but looks and sounds like she's way older. Very good singer and the judges all love her.
Michael Gregory and Chris Lars both have weird hair and sing poorly. Jared Wiley apparently ingested some helium before his audition. Either that, or he's a eunuch.
Nathan Hite is a sixteen year old and a ninth grade repeater. He sings some sort of hard rock song and it's completely atonal. He's a terrible singer. He tries to give some smart ass comments to Simon, but Cowell has nothing of it. This guy is embarrassing himself. He tries to make fun of Simon, but it's painful to watch.
Amanda Overmyer is a traveling nurse - she makes home visits - and in her spare time rides motorcycles. She's dressed fairly goth-y. She IS different, but she's not forceful about it. She's sings some Joplin, and for the first time I can remember, she actually does it justice. She sings another, more straightforward song and she kicks its ass. This girl has an awesome rock voice. Sweet.
Last audition of the day: Josiah is an eighteen year old dude dropped out of school and has been living in his car for the past ten months. He's been on the road, playing gigs. He breaks down in the interview, saying it's lonely and it sucks, but he thinks it's going to work out for him. I hope he's good.
He's not, really. He could be good in a band setting or a singer/songwriter capacity, but he's not a pop singer. He gets three yeses, though, and he's through.
20 total people made it to Hollywood from Atlanta.
