American Idol holds its final true audition episode tonight, this time from Hotlanta.  I've never been to Atlanta, but I presume it's often quite warm there.  I know that Nelly comes from Atlanta and I've always had an explicable dislike of the city, most likely because of the Atlanta Braves and their despicable Tomahawk Chop I witnessed on TBS throughout the nineties.  I picked the picture above because I liked that dress the young woman is wearing.  It's very colorful.  I have no idea whether we'll actually see her in tonight's episode.  Tomorrow, FOX will air a special Best of the Rest audition episode, where FOX takes the best un-aired scraps from all the audition cities.  It's filler until Hollywood week begins.  We'll be here throughout the episode, giving live updates as the episode moves along.

Atlanta is the biggest city in the south, according to Seacrest.  I was not aware.

Seacrest's parents show up - Atlanta is the man's home town.  They seem amiable.

Joshua Jones works will glass.  He's a glass blower and he loves it.  He's floppy-haired dude, seems like a cool guy.  He sings some Queen.  He doesn't have a bad voice, but he does some weird stuff with his voice and some weird stuff with his eyes.  The judges tell him to turn around and do it again.  Paula and Randy say yes, Simon no.  He's going to Hollywood.

JP Tjelemand auditioned in season 4 and sat next to Carrie Underwood as they were going to see the judges.  He's still kicking himself for not befriending Carrie.  JP is a nerd, though, and he didn't have a chance.  Time for another go around.  He should've stayed home.  On a positive note, I like his outfit: pink t-shirt with a black long-sleeve underneath.  He admits that he's majoring music in college.  Yikes.  Pretty lax admission standards wherever he's going.

We get a montage of Paula having a difficult time saying no.  She's such a softie.  This is some big time filler.

Asia'h Epperson is a small town country girl who loves to sing.  Her speaking voice is raspy and I like raspy.  I have high hopes.  Holy Crap!  This is a ridculously sad story.  She called her father on the way up to the audition and told him he'd like him to be their with her.  A half hour later, her brother called and told her that her dad died in a car crash.  Thankfully, she's really good.  She has a unique voice, powerful and in control.  Paula cries, Simon gave her big ups and she's going to Hollywood.

Brooke Helvie is an eighteen year old blonde.  She is currently Miss South Florida Fair.  She's the cream of the carnie crop.  She talks like a female Beavis, if that's something you're interested in.  She also combs her hair a lot.  These are things you should know.  Surprisingly, she's a good singer.  The judges are lukewarm, but give her three yeses.  After she leaves, Simon calls her possibly the most annoying person in the world - he didn't want her to sing well.  Couldn't have said it better, Cowell.

Bad sing-a-long of the night: "Glamorous" by Fergie, which is possibly the worst pop single of the last century.   Fergie's popularity is plain offensive.  She's the worst.

Eva Miller is an idiot who sings an unintelligible version of a Vanessa Carlton song.  She actually might be drunk - Eva falls down during her performance.  Simon is convinced that this was all a show, but it soon becomes clear that it wasn't.  Either that, or she's a really good actor.

Alexandrea Lushington is up next and she's a young lady.  She sings some Ella Fitzgerald,  She's 16 but looks and sounds like she's way older.  Very good singer and the judges all love her.

Michael Gregory and Chris Lars both have weird hair and sing poorly.  Jared Wiley apparently ingested some helium before his audition.  Either that, or he's a eunuch.

Nathan Hite is a sixteen year old and a ninth grade repeater. He sings some sort of hard rock song and it's completely atonal.  He's a terrible singer.  He tries to give some smart ass comments to Simon, but Cowell has nothing of it.  This guy is embarrassing himself.  He tries to make fun of Simon, but it's painful to watch.

Amanda Overmyer is a traveling nurse - she makes home visits - and in her spare time rides motorcycles.  She's dressed fairly goth-y.  She IS different, but she's not forceful about it.  She's sings some Joplin, and for the first time I can remember, she actually does it justice.  She sings another, more straightforward song and she kicks its ass.  This girl has an awesome rock voice.  Sweet.

Last audition of the day: Josiah is an eighteen year old dude dropped out of school and has been living in his car for the past ten months.  He's been on the road, playing gigs.  He breaks down in the interview, saying it's lonely and it sucks, but he thinks it's going to work out for him.  I hope he's good.

He's not, really.  He could be good in a band setting or a singer/songwriter capacity, but he's not a pop singer.  He gets three yeses, though, and he's through.

20 total people made it to Hollywood from Atlanta.

'American Idol': Atlanta auditions

(Photo of me taken by my husband during "American Idol" bad auditions in 2005)

I'm a little sad because the Super Bowl ads made me think that we were through with early auditions and on to Hollywood on American Idol this week. But alas, it was not to be. We are in the home stretch, though ...

First up in Atlanta, Ryan Seacrest's parents show up to say hi because this is his hometown.

Joshua Jones is the first audition of the show. He is a glassworker and he's really passionate about it. Simon stops him because he was bugging out his eyes in a freaky way. They make him turn around and sing to the wall. Simon says he it was a little karaoke (he was singing Queen and sounding too much like Freddie Mercury). Paula says yes, and apparently Randy does, too, because he comes out with a golden ticket.

JP Tjelmeland auditioned in Season 4, two people behind Carrie Underwood, and he really wishes they had stayed in touch. He says people always tell him he has star quality, which I think is not the case. This is not going to go well. He tells the judges he is going to sing some Rascal Flatts for them. It's bad, y'all. Tragic bad. Leaving me re-enacting the photo above bad. He says he really wants to do this and that he doesn't want to do four years of school. He says he's majoring in music, in singing. They say no.

Montage of Paula not able to answer the "yes or no" question easily.

Asia'h Epperson says she is just a small-town girl who loves to sing. She says she had called and told her dad that she was on her way to Atlanta to audition for AI and that 30 minutes later, her brother called and said there had been a car accident and her dad had died. Oh, that's truly awful. She tells the judges she is going to sing "How Do I Live" instead of her original choice, in honor of her father. They let her stop before she gets to the chorus, which is good, because I think she would have lost it. She still manages to keep it together for the whole first part of the song, and I'm very impressed, because I was a puddle crying on the floor before she even got to that part, and I'm just an observer. It's a 100 percent yes.

Miss South Florida Fair Brooke Helvie says she has been singing since she was 4. Simon: "You want to prove to me that pageant girls can sing." Paula makes fun of her for standing with one foot forward (typical pageant stance), and Randy makes a joke that no one else notices: "One foot forward ... and two steps back. ... Put them together cuz opposities attract ...?" Hee. She sings a little, and they say nice things, and she starts jumping up and down. So she gets three yes votes and asks for a hug from Simon and everyone else. Simon, after she leaves, "Possibly the most annoying person I have ever seen in my entire life. ... I didn't want her to sing well."

Montage of people being forced to sing Fergie's "Glamorous."

Eva Miller says she loves Simon and thinks he's hot. She sings "1,000 Miles" and stomps all over the floor, falling down when she steps on her number, which has fallen off. Simon says it's a joke or an act or something. She says it's serious and that she accidentally fell and that she loves Simon and has a crush on him. She starts crying about falling and says she just wanted to entertain them with her dancing. They tell her the singing was not good. Simon asks whether she still likes him, and she says she does, and asks for a hug. She tears up her number and steps on it and stomps away.

Alexandrea Lushington has brought her 93-year-old great-grandmother with her for support. She is 16 and fabulous and through in no time at all. That was abrupt!

Montage of badness and crying.

Nathan Hite says he has some "witty retorts" ready for Simon. Uh-oh. He sings "Paralyzer" by Finger Eleven. He sings with some rock edge, but pacing back and forth. Simon is saying it was a "bedroom audition" because it sounds like he was singing along with the record only not as good. He tries to make fun of Simon and his lines and whether he keeps them all written down. But, uh, it's not funny at all. And he's not through.

Amanda Overmyer is a rocking, motorcycle-riding nurse. She sings some Janis with too many extras, so they stop her and ask for another song. She launches into a different song and they adore her, and she's through.

Montage of golden tickets.

Josiah Leming has been living in his car and playing shows for about 10 months to a year. He cries about how it's rough sometimes and that he's excited for his chance. Simon asks if he can win, and he says yes because he has more ambition than they will find in any other 18-year-old. He sings a song of his own writing, "To Run," with a British accent. They talk to him about it, and he says he listens to a lot of British pop. But they seem intrigued. Paula says she likes him, Randy says he's interesting, so it's a yes, and Simon says yes, too.

Altogether, 20 Atlantan auditioners are through to Hollywood. And we'll see some more tomorrow!

OK. I'm a bit nervous to post here (this is my first post) due to some of the comments here but I thought I'd post what I've heard about Asia'hs dad to put the rumors to rest. I posted this on the americanidol board and the moderator deleted it! I guess it's okay for them to exploit the story but don't want poeple discussing it!

I am from the area. I know someone who is a friend of Asiah. Her father lived in the Houston Texas area. Her parents are divorced.
He went to the dentist and was permitted to drive home after a procedure. He fell asleep and was in a car accident. The family was told he was stable at the hospital and Asiah even talked to her dad. She then drove to Kansas City the following day to board the plane and her brother got a call 30 minutes before her flight left that he had a seizure and was given medication that killed him after an allergic reaction Talk about bad luck - first the dentist and then the hospital.

Now, this is also where I am unclear if this happened during the first audition or second. I'm pretty certain it was the first one because If you watch the video of her in the stadium she is wearing a black shirt and the second audition she is wearing something different. This would also explain why she maybe wasn't so emotional. Perhaps she told the producers the first audition that her dad had just died and they capitolized on it and had her tell the story for the second one like it had just happened. She also had her aunt with her when she came out from seeing the judges so I can't imagine this was all taking place 2 days later.
