American Idol: Jordin Sparks is Super at the Super Bowl
It’s not often I write a piece on just one song but this was something special. Very special.
I am kind of ashamed to admit this but I had forgotten that Jordin would be doing the National Anthem this Super Bowl. Luckily I was going to watch it anyway as is custom this time every year. I didn’t participate in the pre-game hype and I did miss Paula in her big to do. But I recorded the game and do have Jordin’s magnificent performance for posterity.
When one thinks of singing the National Anthem, it conjures thoughts of boringness and repetitiveness. Along with "Will they forget the words or make some up along the way" or "Can they hit that high note?". Jordin fixed all that for me tonight with the best National Anthem I have ever heard.
In my 52 years I have heard the National Anthem sang at least 1500 times of which 1495 are totally forgettable and mostly annoying. While I can’t really remember the three of the five good times I’ve heard it I can remember two. One is famous by any standard and that was Whitney Houston’s version which is now the one that always comes to mind for most anyone who has heard it. But now for me a new benchmark has been set by 18 year old Jordin Sparks on this 42nd Super Bowl Sunday.
Not only did Jordin get all the words right she hit every note spot on. Jordin sang with passion and conviction. And about those high notes; she spanked them upside the head. Her delivery and vocal were inspirational. Instead of what is normally a boring redundant version, Jordin managed to put new spark in this 225 year old song. She made relevant, not gratuitous melody changes that actually made the song interesting throughout not just filler till we get to hear that great high note at the end.
I am not alone when I think we should change the National Anthem to “America the Beautiful”. But for the first time ever, I felt the National Anthem. And I’m sure I’m not the only one. In fact this was one of two highlights of the night. The other was the Giants upset win over the Patriots. I hope the people in the stands and the 90+ million or so who watched Super Bowl 42 understood the greatness that was witnessed in the game and in the song. It may be another 225 years before we hear as great a version.
Is it Tuesday yet?
