For music students at Symmes Junior and D'Arcy McGee High in Aylmer, the only thing better than playing new musical instruments was playing them for Canadian Idol Eva Avila.
Fresh from her hometown debut the night before, the reigning hometown Idol yesterday joined 1,000 students at the new educational centre's gym to listen to the school's bands play new instruments recently purchased with a $10,000 MusiCan grant.
FORTUNATE STUDENTS
Avila told the students they should consider themselves fortunate.
"There wasn't a band at my school, Ecole Secondaire de l'Ile, when I was their age," Avila recalled. "If it weren't for my father teaching me music, I wouldn't be here."
Afterward, a few of the 1,000 students got to ask the singer questions before Avila and band members Collin Barrett and Dane Hartsell played her new single Meant To Fly.
For the two Aylmer schools, the annual MusiCan grant -- awarded to schools needing instruments -- couldn't have come at a better time.
"With a senior, a junior, two jazz bands and an adult band on the go, the school had to borrow instruments just to keep them all going," said MusiCan's Srinka Wallia.
Avila later admitted Tuesday's gig at Gatineau's Maison de la Culture, her first hometown performance as the 2006 Idol, was nerve-racking.
"I was really nervous last night before the concert because I knew that there were many friends and family in the audience. I really wanted the concert to go well for them," Avila told the Sun. "But the audience gave me such a warm reception that I could feel the love. It's good to be home."
Avila performs at Gatineau's Casino Lac Leamy Theatre April 18.

Par voie de communiqué, le Parti québécois soutient que d'autres politiciens de la région se sont eux aussi associés au succès de la chanteuse.
Ce n'est pas la première fois qu'un artiste se retrouve, à son insu, plongé dans la campagne électorale.
Rappelons que la semaine dernière, DJ Champion a demandé à l'ADQ de cesser d'utiliser sa musique lors de ses assemblées partisanes.
Sony BMG n'a pas indiqué si elle allait pousser cette affaire plus loin, et demander au Parti québécois de retirer le nom d'Eva Avila de son programme.

TORONTO (CP) - Toronto's L'Oreal Fashion Week kicked into high gear as Mackage took to the runway Tuesday night.
The fall collection of Elisa Dahan and Eran Elfassy, the two behind the Montreal label, had all the Mackage outerwear style details fans have come to expect: a sleek jet-setter silhouette that makes dressing warmly look downright hot. Even parkas looked sexy as opposed to bulky.
"We make a girl want to go out in winter and look and feel sexy," said Elfassy after the show, adding that sometimes people think that to dress warmly you just cover up without a hope of looking fetching.
Added Dahan: "Now you can wear heels with a puffy coat."
The Mackage look shifted a little as the military details were slightly softened with more feminine touches: fewer antique-look buttons and more girlie looks such as puffed princess sleeves.
But this year the designing duo surprised fashionistas with the addition of knitwear to their collection.
In years past we've seen wool and knit accents on jackets and coats. But the crowd at fashion week, which included Canadian Idol Eva Avila, Mary Jo Eustace and Ken Kostick among the front-row celebrities, was treated to sweaters, sweater coats and skirts with suspenders.
Overall the collection had a very modern feel to it, although there was something quite retro about many of the outerwear pieces.
"There are elements of the '30s, but it is also modernized," said Dahan.
Earlier in the evening Marlene Shiff decided to break all the rules and do a show featuring six of the designers she carries in her Toronto store, Boutique Le Trou.
The audience saw offerings from Jason Malto, Karamea, Nada, Cristina Darling, Marie Saint Pierre and Jason Meyers.
"It's a piece of the puzzle of Canadian fashion," Shiff said after the runway showing.
The store, which carries 90 per cent Canadian designs, was recently cited in Vogue by the magazine's editors, who voted it one of their favourite places to shop.
Shiff's long-range plan is to showcase new Canadian designers in Toronto and Canada and then to get them out in the world market.
"And I will single-handedly do it before I die or retire."
Fashion Week continues until Saturday.

There is no Idol off-season for Eva Avila.
The 2006 Canadian Idol champ has been busy this winter -- picking up a Juno nomination, turning 20 and touring to support her debut disc.
Her tour reaches Centennial Hall on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Avila released her debut Somewhere Else (Sony BMG) in November of 2006 and the record immediately landed at No. 6 on the SoundScan Canadian Top 100 Chart.
"I miss performing in front of a live audience," she said before the tour. "It's been so long since I've had the chance to give a full-length performance. Now that I am going on the road to play all of these new songs with my incredible new (five-piece) band . . . I just can't wait to get on stage."
Last September, she won the fourth edition of the CTV pop vocal contest by beating Newfoundland and Labrador's Craig Sharpe by 130,000 votes -- a margin of 3.3 per cent in fan voting totalling about four million ballots. She's the second female Canadian Idol. The previous Idols -- Ryan Malcolm, Kalan Porter and 2005 winner, Melissa O'Neil -- have all made stops at Centennial Hall on their post-victory tours.
Avila left behind life as a postal clerk and beauty consultant.
A former winner of the provincial Jeune Diva du Quebec singing contest, her foray on Idol wasn't her first jaunt into the spotlight. Avila first sang publicly at three years old, growing up with a musician father who she describes as a one-man band.
Carlos Avila has been joining his Idol daughter on stage at some points on the tour. Some critics haven't been impressed, saying their duet on Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time doesn't work -- and his stagey, huggy, "Je t'aime," and her answer of, "Merci," must go.
Eva Avila still stays in touch with her roots in Quebec.
"I would love to start thinking about making a French record. That's just an idea of mine -- nothing is concrete yet or confirmed, but that's definitely something that's in the works because it's really important for me to make a French record in the near future," she says.
Avila has been visiting schools to praise music education.
"For my next album, I might be writing my own songs on my piano and playing, or whatever. So it all leads to something good. I just think it's so important to have (music education) in every school possible.
"It's just like physical education, which is good for your health and your mental health as well. Music is a great therapy and it's like food for the soul."
Featured writers on her debut include Chantal Kreviazuk with Meant to Fly and Lauper, who wrote and produced This Kind of Love.

Eva just announced on Flash (Québec entertainment show) that she is the new face of Maybelline New York. They were on the set of her new video. The host also said that Eva will perform at the Junos, but I am not sure about that.

Competitors planning to audition in Toronto will get one heck of a show while they wait, courtesy of two of the hottest singers to come out of the Idol franchise - Katharine McPhee and Eva Avila.
The first day of try-outs at the city's downtown Yonge-Dundas Square -- April 14 -- will feature McPhee, last year's "American Idol" runner-up, and Avila, the current Canadian Idol, as well as various other live performances throughout the day.
Both women have made blockbuster careers from the exposure they received on their respective incarnations of Idol.
McPhee was the first "American Idol" singer in the series' six-year history to begin her chart career with two debuts in the same week.
Her current single "Over It" hit the Billboard charts at number two in the United States and is currently approaching Top 10 on the Hot AC radio charts in Canada.
After winning the "Canadian Idol" title in the most closely contested final ever in the show's history, Eva Avila released the gold-selling "Somewhere Else" album, earning a Juno nomination for best new artist of the year. Currently wrapping up a 32-city national concert tour, Avila is set to release her third single -- "Falling For You" -- on April 9.
Susanne Boyce, CTV's President of Programming, says the success of both women shows American and Canadian Idol are great ways for singers to place themselves in the spotlight.
"Eva Avila (and) Katharine McPhee (are) living proof that dreams do come true -- that Idol makes superstars out of previously unknown talents," she said. "That next superstar might just show up in Toronto on April 14."
Also on the bill is the city's Media Idol event, where local members of the media will compete in a singing contest in front of the show's judges. The winner will earn a spot in the televised national finals and $1,000 for a charity of their choice.
The downtown auditions will take place on April 14 and 15, followed by a second set of Toronto-area auditions at the Oshawa Centre mall on April 17 and 18. Registration will be open on all Toronto audition days from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
