Gatineau held a love-in for its favourite daughter last night, as Eva Avila came home to perform for the first time since winning "Canadian Idol" last September.

Avila, who turns 20 on Sunday, played the first of three shows to a sold-out crowd at the city's 800-plus seat Maison de la Culture.

The evening was conducted almost entirely in French - though Avila also sang in Spanish and English - and prompted almost a half-dozen standing ovations.

The singer, who released her first album "Somewhere Else" with Sony-BMG late last year, was clearly overwhelmed.

"Wow," she said, gazing around at the cheering, clapping, familiar crowd. "Oh my God!"

It may have been mere months since she was introduced to the country on the singing reality show, and she has just a handful of concerts under her belt since kicking off her cross-country tour off in Montreal on Valentine's Day, but Avila displayed a remarkable polish and ease on stage. That helped her to playfully toy with the audience in timing while performing some of her more dramatic tunes, like Prince's (via Alicia Keys) tune "How Come You Don't Call," which was a highlight of the "Idol" finals.

Backed by a versatile band of five, she deftly dug into pieces from her album while nodding to her French and Spanish backgrounds. Though Avila was capable on the album tunes, like first and second singles "Meant to Fly" and "Owe it All," and the closer "Fallin' For You," it was when she sang French favourites like the gorgeous "Il y a De l'Amour Dans L'Air," or wriggled into salsa mode for Spanish songs like Selena's "Si una vez," that she really shone.

There was a touching moment midway through the show when Avila's father Carlos came out to duet on Cindy Lauper's "Time After Time" and the peppy Spanish staple "Guantanamera."

Avila's young brother, Carlos Manuel, sweetly joined in on the bongos, while his father joked "Canadian Idol 2010 - we're working on it."

Before the encore Gatineau Mayor Marc Bureau honoured Avila for all her achievements, and led the crowd in singing her an early "Bonne Fete."

It sure looked easier on Avila than pressure cooker "Idol" ever was, and like a whole lot more fun too.

REVIEW: Eva Avila

Avila’s career is meant to fly

Idol winner wows hometown crowd, shows talent to make it big

By Patrick Langston

Canadian Idol winner Eva Avila performs last night at La Maison de la Culture in Gatineau. Although she showed her Idol roots at times, her confidence and clear, powerful voice — especially the hearty sustains on the big, soulful numbers — augur well for her future.

So, what you really want to know is whether Eva Avila in the flesh is worthy of being idolized, right?

After all, it’s one thing to nail down the Canadian Idol title, as the Gatineau-born looker did last September.

And putting together a freshman album that debuted at No. 6, which Avila’s Somewhere Else did in November, may not be that tough – especially when you’ve got a heavyweight label like Sony/BMG, a team of 25 songwriters and a hyper-active, expectant fan base behind you.

Even Avila’s recent Juno nomination in the best new artist category doesn’t necessarily signal “star in the making.”

But taking center stage on the grueling tour circuit where every misstep gets pinned by the spotlights, now that’ll separate the wannabes from the will-bes.

Last night, Avila came down in the will-be (or, at least, deserves-to-be) camp when she performed before more than 800 delirious hometown fans at the Salle Odyssée in La Maison de la Culture de Gatineau.

The sold-out show opened a three-night run in the venue and marked the second week of Avila’s maiden tour, a two-month, cross-country affair.

Dipping into the mixed bag of soul, R&B, and pop tunes that are her hallmark, Avila sang I Owe It All to You, Not So Different and others.

Also on the bill – and greeted by a roar of audience appreciation – was Meant to Fly, the inspirational number that won Avila the Idol crown and became her first single.

Avila occasionally betrayed her Idol beginning, especially in some of her predictable stage moves. The cornball duet on Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time with her musician and daughter-boosting father, Carlos Avila, also needs to go, particularly the bit where they hug, he says “Je t’aime,” and she answers “Merci.”

But Avila’s confidence last night and her clear, powerful voice – especially her expressive control over a considerable range – augured well for the future.

Avila was at one point reduced to charming, tearful speechlessness when her audience, which ranged form wee ones to grandparents, sprang to its feet for the first of several standing ovations.

“I’m so happy to be here tonight,” Avila finally managed, before going on to thank Gatineau for its support.

A decent five-piece band backed Avila, who turns 20 next week and was clearly the boss last night.

Despite a great voice and an ideal backup band, Eva Avila didn't draw like Kalan Porter.

Canadians Idol fans were somewhere else last night. They weren't at Centennial Hall

The 2006 Canadian Idol winner Eva Avila had a crowd estimated at 500 fans in an almost empty hall -- but turned in a show with enough of her big voice to survive the cavern.

Avila was strongest on her 1980s, singing hits by Annie Lennox, Michael Jackson and Prince during her 75-minute show.

"Sometimes, I wish I was born in the '70s so I could have been a teenager in the '80s -- but then I couldn't have been here with you tonight," she said before launching into a strong Sweet Dreams and other Lennox-tied hits in a mid-set medley.

Avila, the 2006 winner of CTV's pop vocal contest, has been touring to support her debut CD Somewhere Else.

Last night, she had company from another 2006 Idol contender, Ashley Coulter of London. Those who did get in the house with Avila had a chance to meet-and-greet Coulter as the London singer wore her trademark cap and beamed.

After a delay for the Coulter session, Avila was working the mic from centre stage. Appropriately, she opened with Somewhere Else's first track I Owe It All to You.

The famous Avila voice -- which has made her the Idol most likely to sing something big one day -- sounded fine.

Right away, there was something else for this reviewer to cheer about.

For once, the guitar-playing husband of Idol judge Sass Jordan didn't get the call to lead the band of an Idol winner playing Centennial Hall.

Avila's bassist and music director, Collin Barrett, is a much better fit than Derek Sharp, the classic rocker who seemed to have a death grip on the Idol tours.

For all that Avila has going right -- the voice, the band and her touch with soul and R&B material -- she still has to get Idol fans to her shows.

Last night, scores headed for the door after the main set finished with Fallin' for You, Avila's next single.

Apparently, they thought that was it. Avila and the band hustled back on stage in time to intercept some of the slower retreaters in the house with the Prince-to-Alicia-Keys-to-Avila How Come You Don't Call Me.

It fired up her Idol chances last summer -- and it started the encore strongly last night. The song obviously still works for Avila.

She still needs something else -- drawing power.

Based on last night's intimate gathering, the 2007 Idol gods may want to conjure up another Kalan Porter from this year's audition pack.

Porter sold tickets to females of all ages when he played a packed Centennial Hall on his Idol tour.

Last night, there was a long silence while fans waited for the show to begin. That eerie silence was broken by the scream-producing arrival of George, the opening act, his two sidekick dancers and his backing tracks. Like Avila, he's nominated for a Juno.

In his case, it's harder to figure out why. Toronto's George does have Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough in the background to help his career -- and a showbiz family for support. Maybe the Juno short-listers miss the Backstreet Boys.
