Citation :So You Think You Can Dance Canada Recap: Top 10 lacked lustre, but here are 10 reasons to keep watching

Posted: November 13, 2008,  by Brad Frenette

Television, Top 10 lists, So You Think You Can Dance, Recaps

[Reason # 7 to keep watching the show: Natalli Reznik. Courtesy CTV]

By Daryl Sneath

So, So You Think You Can Dance Canada has made it to the Top 10—dancers, that is, not ranking. I have no idea where they rank as a show. If I had to guess, I’d say they rank high, if rankings depend solely on the quality of dancers. But if rankings depend at all on other TV (terribly vital) components—some of the judges, say, or the host—I’m not so sure they’d find themselves in the top 10.

In keeping with the Top 10 tone, here are, in descending order, the Top 10 reasons to continue (or to start) watching:

Reason #10:
The catch phrases. Every judge (except, thankfully, Tré Armstrong & Luther Brown) has his own “Bus” which will take you to the “Train” that will drop you off at the “Rocket” which will send you on a first class ticket to the “VID List.” Who knew dance adjudicators could add so much to the language?

Reason #9:
Host Leah Miller’s love for Mercedes-Benz. At the beginning of every show, she tells the audience about the $100 000 grand prize and the “brand new, 2009 C230 Mercedes-Benz” that she so cleverly jokes about, almost invariably, by suggesting that she might get to—wink, wink—drive around in the Benz herself. I’m certain that if she gets to present the winner with the car, it will be the highlight of the hosting experience for her. Her next hosting gig should be The Price is Right Canada.

Reason #8:
The dancers’ opening walk across the stage. It’s just a walk. But it’s such a great walk. They’re so in synch. And it would look so cool in slow motion. Like in a Tarantino flick.

Reason #7:
Natalli Reznik. Even my wife can’t take her eyes off this dancer.

Reason #6:
Explosive, unexpected jeering from the audience. Off-screen, choreographer Sean Cheesman blasted judge Tré Armstrong for her comments about how Miles didn’t “transform [himself] this time.” “He did transform himself,” Cheesman yelled. “He’s a b-boy, and he did transform. Boo! Boo!” So unexpected. So unCanadian. So entertaining. And Tré, in Tré fashion, continued her evaluation, unfrazzled, unshakeably cool.

Reason #5:
Allie Bertram. A ballet dancer who seems to be able to pull off any genre. For her solo last night, she wore one ballet shoe, a tu-tu, and a highland dancer tank-top. It was by far the most original, most captivating routine of the show.

Reason #4:
The Canadian criticism (or should I say “assessment,” so as not to be too negative). The harshest comment any of the dancers have received to date is “It didn’t do it for me tonight” or “I’ve got to keep it real—you just didn’t hit it hard enough.” It’s as though the judges are fearful of hurting the dancers’ feelings or suffering the wrath of the audience (see Reason #6). They are judges. Their job is to judge. Not to come up with, and I use this adjective loosely, clever catch phrases (see Reason #10).

At the end of the show, when the judges all comment on their favourite dancers, they make absolute certain to include every single competitor. So inclusive. So nice. So Canadian. Tonight’s show was the first time, during this group-wide commentary, that a judge said something critical to one of the dancers. Good ol’ Jean-Marc (“keepin’ it real”) told Izaak that he did not deserve to be in the Top 8. Bam! A judgement. And you should have heard the “Oooohs” and “Ahhhs” coming from the crowd. We’ll see if that little jab just doesn’t light a fire under Mr. Izaak Smith for next week. I bet it does.

Reason #3:
Arrasay Reyes. She is the Cuban Chameleon. She is the reason to watch. She makes the whole show “so...much...fun.”

Reason #2:
Miles Faber and Nico Archambault. I hope they make these two guys go head to head one night, foot to foot. What they can make their bodies do is incredible. It would be one magnificent battle.

And the #1 reason to continue watching So You Think You Can Dance Canada: It’s Canadian.
