If You Watch:
What: Premiere of “American Idol” season six.
When: 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
Channel: WEUX, Fox 25/48.
As a North High School student, Sarah Krueger wowed sports fans by belting out her rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before school games.
On Tuesday the 2005 grad will share her vocal stylings with a national audience as a contestant on “American Idol’s” sixth season.
It’s an opportunity the 20-year-old almost passed up, said her mother, Barb Krueger. The singer hemmed and hawed about whether to try her luck at September’s auditions in Minnesota, she said.
“A lot of people heard that the auditions were in Minneapolis and they really encouraged her to do it,” Barb Krueger said. “She really changed her mind at the last minute.”
The choice paid off. And Krueger, who is on “Idol” promos, already has a lot of local folks in her cheering section.
North Choral Director Paul Gilbertson is eager to see his former student on TV. He thinks the confidence Krueger showed as a member of the school’s show choir will shine brightly under a national spotlight.
“She’s always been a soloist who puts her own stamp on the song,” he said. “That quality is rare in a young person … She has all the emotion and passion and sensitivity of a seasoned performer.”
The North dance team, which Krueger performed with as a high schooler, is skipping its pre-game routine at Tuesday’s girls basketball game to catch the start of “Idol.” Members also plan to retreat to a TV during halftime.
“We are just super-excited that other people can see her talent,” said coach Wendy Sue Johnson. “The current teams and the parents are going to watch in the teachers’ lounge.”
As a dancer, Krueger exuded a type of magnetism, Johnson said. Her personality will serve her well on “Idol,” she said.
“Sarah’s a natural in front of people,” Johnson said. “She has a charisma that makes you want to watch her when she’s on the floor.”
Krueger, an education student at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, cannot comment on the show.
