CTV Announces Largest Promotional Campaign For A Series

CTV today announced its biggest promotional campaign ever for a television series on the
network. Beginning September 1, CTV will roll out an extensive national multi-platform promotional campaign supporting the highly-anticipated premiere of So You Think You Can Dance Canada. Creating a strong presence for the
series on air, online and in cities across the nation, the campaign is designed to generate buzz for the series, drive viewer awareness
and potentially inspire Canadians to dance!

Premiering Thursday, September 11 at 8 p.m. ET on CTV, and with an encore presentation on Sunday, September 14 on MuchMusic, So You Think You Can Dance Canada showcases a hotbed of dancing talent determined to waltz, tap, krump
and cha cha into the hearts of Canadians across the country.

Starting Monday, the widespread outdoor, radio and online promotional activities will be visible in major markets across Canada, including Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Montreal. Already in high rotation on the
vast array of CTVglobemedia's channels, the latest high-energy on-air promo is just the start of an extensive rollout for the premiere.

Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. said "Coming off
the record-breaking season for the American version of this hit international format, we're hoping to capitalize on the dance fever taking over the nation with this comprehensive campaign."

"We are rolling out the promotional red carpet for So You Think You Can Dance Canada," said Rick Lewchuk, Senior Vice-President, CTV Creative Agency and Brand Strategy. "Due to the strength of the top-rated CTV schedule, we
have a unique opportunity to focus our firepower during fall launch on the one new series everyone's talking about."

Across Canada, the So You Think You Can Dance Canada campaign boasts eye-catching advertisements peppered across major cities in multiple provinces. Always on the move, hundreds of bus billboards will be spotted in three major Canadian markets including Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton. Dynamic transit shelter ads will be unveiled in key markets Toronto, Vancouver and
Montreal. Off the street and on the dial, the promotion continues with a radio buy of 30-second spots in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal and Quebec City. Furthering its presence across the nation, the So You Think You Can Dance Canada campaign is rounded out by a national online buy through Ad.com.

In Toronto specifically, public transit gets "dancified," with the station domination branding of Union Station, the inside of six subway cars and completely wrapping two subway cars. Additionally, a classic Toronto
streetcar is branded as the new Toronto "Dance Car," with custom-made wrapping. The promotional party continues as large billboards are being
unveiled in the heart of the city at Yonge and Dundas Square, Young and Bloor,
and the Hydro Plant board at Front and John streets along with a painted mural at Queen and John Streets.

Then, as the nation prepares for the premiere on September 11, So You Think You Can Dance Canada Street Teams and interactive branded vehicles will get the dance party started as groups of dancers target high traffic areas in
Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.

The campaign was designed and executed by the CTV Creative Agency.

Citation :Upcoming TV shows: Project Runway and So You Think You Can Dance Canada
By Craig Takeuchi

Fall season TV is almost upon us. Time to start cocooning.

I prefer watching reality shows in which contestants put their creativity (rather than their bitchiness) to the test.

Next week, season five of the American version of Project Runway starts on Monday (September 1) on Slice.

Returning once again are supermodel and host Heidi Klum, the ever-nurturing mentor Tim Gunn, designer Michael Kors, and Elle editor Nina Garcia.

I've taken a look at the preview screener and it's as intriguing as ever. Again, there are a wide range of design styles and personalities that keep things interesting. Celebrity guest judges include RuPaul, Natalie Portman, and Brooke Shields.

And the following week, on September 11, we can take a look at just how well (or poorly) Canadian dancing feet measure up with So You Think You Can Dance Canada. It'll play on CTV, with repeats on MuchMusic.

It'll be hosted by MuchMusic VJ Leah Miller.

The September 11 premiere will start with the Toronto auditions (which had the largest audition turnouts in North America), followed by the Vancouver and Halifax auditions on September 14. September 17 will feature the Montreal and Calgary auditions. (What, no Winnipeg or Whitehorse auditions?)Each will be two hours long for your viewing pleasure.

Special guest judges will include Rex Harrington from the National Ballet of Canada, and Mary Murphy and Dan Karaty from the U.S. series.

n So You Think You Can Dance Canada. Premieres Sept. 11 on CTV.

To suggest that Tre Armstrong is excited about next week's premiere of So You Think You Can Dance Canada would be off the mark -- way off the mark.

In fact, the Toronto-born dancer is more jump-up-and-down-can't-sleep exhilarated about the series premiere. She'll be one of the show's permanent judges, after all.

Judge Tre Armstrong says a lot of different styles will be shown on So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

"To sit here and say that I'm just excited is downplaying it way too much," says Armstrong in a phone interview. Instead, she equates her emotion to being like an air-filled balloon that a mischievous child won't stop blowing up until it explodes. "I think I'm at that popping point," she says.

While only time will tell if Armstrong has a set of lungs as powerful as "Queen of the Scream" Mary Murphy, a judge on the American version of the show, Armstrong says the long-awaited Canadian series is not going to disappoint its fans.

In terms of the show's format, the Canadian version will have much in common with its American cousin, says Armstrong. "But content-wise, we're going to be similar yet different."

She says Canada's multiculturalism will be evident in the show. "Canada is a culturally diverse country. Sometimes it's kind of hard to get one sound, one thought from so many different types of people.

"We have a lot of different ethnic choreographers, a lot of different styles combined in one."

Speaking of choreography, the show represents a rare opportunity for many well-known Canadian choreographers to work on home turf.

"Canada has so much talent (but) we send everybody away," says Armstrong. "Now it's a good way for all of us to say, 'Come on back.'"

Armstrong says Canadians need not question whether our dancers will display as much talent as they do stateside.

"There's so many young dancers who are already so far without even hitting the professional stage," she says. "Our talent is amazing. I'd say, 'Watch out, America.'"

During the audition process, Armstrong says judges were after dancers who displayed personality and uniqueness -- not just smooth dancing skills. "You've got to shine. There has to be some twinkle about you."

Montreal's Jean Marc Genereux, an expert in ballroom dance, will occupy the show's other permanent judging position. Armstrong and Genereux will be joined by a variety of dancing know-it-alls on the judges' panel, including Luther Brown, Blake McGrath, Mary Murphy and Rex Harrington of the National Ballet of Canada.

There will be a few surprise guests on the show throughout the season, but Armstrong remains tight-lipped on that subject.

"We're sure to get a few surprises this year. I won't say what, but I'm sure we're going to get a couple of surprises."

Of course the show's ultimate success will depend on how receptive Canadians are to it.

"It's such an amazing experience to be part of the show. I'm just really hoping that Canada sees what's going on, engages with the show, and votes."

So you think you can impress these judges?

Tré Armstrong and Jean Marc Genereux are two of the judges on So You Think You Can Dance Canada, which premieres on CTV tonight.

Arbiters on So You Think You Can Dance Canada soon to become household names

Sep 11, 2008

Susan Walker
DANCE WRITER

It's possible there are a few Canadians who don't know about So You Think You Can Dance – people who live in the wilderness without TV, Internet or any other contemporary forms of communication – but only a few.

When the season premiere of So You Think You Can Dance Canada comes up at 8 p.m. on CTV tonight, it's a good bet that hundreds of thousands of viewers will tune in. Many will be surprised to see the calibre of dancing to come out of auditions held in Vancouver, Halifax, Montreal and Toronto that drew 2,500 hopefuls.

Out of that number, judges Tré Armstrong, Jean-Marc Genereux, Luther Brown and Blake McGrath plucked 200 dancers to come to Toronto for a five-day intensive "boot camp." Viewers will watch 20 of them get whittled down to 10, who will go through the final elimination rounds. Guest judges, including the National Ballet's artist-in-residence Rex Harrington, and Mary Murphy, choreographer and judge on the American show, contribute to the agonizing process.

Ultimately, when the public chooses Canada's favourite dancer, sometime in December, one of those young people who lined up in the early hours of a spring morning will go home with $100,000 – and newfound national fame.

The top-rated summer show in the U.S., So You Think You Can Dance is the creation of Simon Fuller, the former music manager behind the British Pop Idol shows and its progeny American Idol and Canadian Idol, and his partnering producer and SYTYCD judge Nigel Lythgoe. Over four seasons, the American series has turned Lythgoe and host Cat Deeley into household names.

The same thing is likely to happen to host Leah Miller, to Armstrong, a lead in this year's dance movie How She Move, and ballroom champion Genereux, who has been a guest judge and choreographer for the American show since its second season.

Genereux has already had a taste of Dance fame: "A lot of people think I live in L.A.," says the winner of more than 100 dance competitions (with his wife France Mousseau). "I live in Boucherville, Que."

The Canadian audition process has been an eye-opener for him. "America has amazing dancers," he says, "but we have nothing to be ashamed of. I realize now how much depth we have."

Ballroom and Latin dancing is not so prevalent in the 18-to-30 age group of SYTYCD qualifiers, but it's the category where the most partnering goes on and Genereux is there to ensure the big contenders are good at dancing in pairs. He's found that those with ballroom skills have an edge.

Her hip-hop skills have taken Armstrong into the big leagues in the U.S., where she has danced for Rihanna, Missy Elliot, Sean (Diddy) Combs, Hilary Duff and 50 Cent, among others. She knows what it's like to succeed in that very large pond.

There are others like her, with some professional training and professional experience, who have turned up at the auditions. But dancers with nothing but street training have also impressed the judges. The show, she says, is helping encourage up-and-coming talent. As the Canadian SYTYCD moves into future seasons, Genereux feels it will be even more effective in reaching potential dance stars around the country.

Armstrong is impressed with spunk. "There's no time for nervousness or fear," she says.

She can tell when a dancer comes on thinking, "Let me get her attention to let her know I'm not afraid."

The show's big appeal is in building drama and creating characters that an audience can root for. "We build a fan base for them," says Genereux. "You'll see. They'll come on to dance and hear their name being screamed out."
