Citation :Stars and hopefuls shine at outdoor Idol concert

Hopeful music stars gathered at Yonge-Dundas Square for the first day of Canadian Idol auditions in Toronto, an event that took a new approach compared to previous years.
Canadian Idol auditions usually attract thousands of people with dreams of making it big in the music business. For the 2007 auditions, the show's producers decided to make it a concert event.
Performing in an outdoor concert were American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee and the current Canadian Idol Eva Avila.
"Eva Avila (and) Katharine McPhee (are) living proof that dreams do come true," Susanne Boyce, President of Programming for CTV said recently.
Boyce added that "Idol makes superstars" out of people who were unknown before their appearance on the show.
"That next superstar might just show up in Toronto on April 14."
Auditions for this year's Idol program were held at a nearby location. Rule changes this year allowed potential contestants to audition while playing an instrument.
The shows producers said it has proven to be very successful during auditions across the country, with fully half of the competitors picked so far playing instruments for the judges.
"It's time that Toronto shows the rest of the country what it's made of in the talent department and brings some real contenders to the Canadian Idol stage this Summer," John Brunton, Canadian Idol's Executive Producer said.
"Pack up your instruments and join the party," he added.
Auditions started at 8 a.m and continued throughout the day. The outdoor concert with Avila and McPhee started a half hour later. Also performing was the Vancouver-based pop-punk band Faber Drive.
A second day of auditions is slated for Sunday. After this weekend, Canadian Idol moves to Oshawa on April 17 for another two full days of auditions.

Eva puts best foot forward as career continues to take off
13 APRIL 2007
Many women would love to swap shoes with Canadian chanteuse Eva Avila. The stylish Canadian Idol winner got to try out some new ones of her own, though, on Wednesday night when she stepped out to an exclusive footwear launch.
"I love shoes," admitted the pretty brunette to HELLO!, saying she'd only owned a few pairs of well-worn favourites before hitting the big time. "Now I have 40 different pairs!" she confesses.
Being surrounded by stylists and fashion advisers is an inevitable result of the elegant singer's success, and Eva, who has just signed as the new face of Maybelline cosmetics, says she's enjoying every minute of it. "Everyone has really helped me develop my sense of style and my sense of fashion," she reveals. "Now I have an idea what I want to look like and what kind of image I want."
While her busy schedule doesn't allow her to visit home as often as she'd like, Eva, who's set to plays Toronto's Music Hall on Saturday, will be showing off her new sense of style when she returns to the stage in her Gatineau hometown on April 18.
