Hey there all of my loverly little Sokies... :rockon:

I had the hugest, longest, most descrïptive entry for all of you... and of course computer illiterate me... erased the darn thing. Man... am I ever angry right now...

BUT I will patiently rewrite it. . .

I don't want you guys to think that I'm neglecting you. I've been so busy the last few months with recording and organizing this album I haven't really had much time to just stop and collect myself. I'm in the process of trying to get the website to the point of updating journals weekly so I can keep y'all updated on where I am and what's shakin' wherever I may be.

I just spent all of February in Vancouver recording the first half of the album with two producers that live there. John Collins (plays bass in The New Pornographers and a million other bands) and David Carswell (also plays in a million bands) They're great producers and musicians and they really put a totally new spice into my music. Adding some really cool guitar sounds and some whooping tambourine tracks. They've produced a lot of Tegan and Sara's albums in the past, as well as all of the New Pornographers albums, Destroyer, A.C Newman and Immaculate Machine to name a few. I have admired their projects and bands for a lot of years so it was a huge dream come true to get into the studio with them. It was such an incredible time. I learned so much. We recorded most of the tracks at a studio called The Factory with an engineer named Sheldon Zaharko (he's a total powerhouse) and some of the guitar tracks and vocals at their studio (JC/DC). The Factory had such an incredible vibe. It's crazy to hear about the bands that have recorded there in the past. You could really feel the history. It ended up being so low stress and so much fun. I'm really so excited about this record. I've put so much of my heart into it. I hope you guys dig the music.

My band mates were only there for two days at the beginning of February, but they got everything done in those days, which made the following four weeks so much easier on me, Dave and John. Those band mates of mine... they're total pros. We drove from Saskatoon/Red Deer and it was insane. I think we hit every kind of bad weather ever. We managed to make it safely... but it did take 17 hours from Red Deer... normally it's supposed to take 13. The drive back was quicker and quieter I'm sure, without T Bone in the zone.

Kelly ... my friend who did the cover art for "These Old Charms" came with us to document the whole recording process, so I'm sure it's only a matter of time until we get some of that ridiculous footage out to you guys. Some of it is HILARIOUS!!!! I'll get some posted just as soon as I figure out how to use a computer. Don't hold your breath... I'm a total nimrod on these things! I promise I'll get better!

John, David and I went out to Galiano Island to do most of the vocals in absolute paradise... recording "Here I Am" lyrics with a perfect view of the ocean. Incroyable!!! I haven't words to describe it. All and all one of the most relaxing and soul searching times of my life to date. Unfortunately I have no pictures of Galiano because Kelly went back with the band dudes. I only have pictures in my memory... but that's okay. There's more than enough of the other stuff.

After finishing the recording in Van I went home to Saskatoon for about two days to do some laundry and take my mom out for supper for her birthday. I hopped a plane to Toronto on the 27th. Of course only to be stuck in traffic for three hours... 5 car pile up on the Gardiner. There sure are some crazy drivers here. My stress levels in Toronto aren't even comparable to when I had to drive the 20 passenger van on the 401... It's nice to enjoy the scenery from the other side of the car.

So I've been here since the 27th of February and here I will stay until the 13th of March. I begin recording the second half of the album with Mike Timmins (Cowboy Junkies) this saturday. I'm excited and scared and totally ready for it (or feel like I've been). I just hope I can put sentences together when I'm working with him... that or else know when to shut up. I'm really quite nervous. He's a total powerhouse!

I fly to Winnipeg on the 13th of March to get two more of those nasty wisdom teeth yankered out... STRESS!!! I never knew it was possible to be in so much pain whilst laying vocal tracks in Vancouver. I felt like my jaw was splitting apart on some occasions. I felt like doing this to myself.... *replace the goofy smile with tears please*
I wish I could remove them myself. Silly teeth... :tbone:

So what else is there to say in this novella to my precious Sokies? The last entry was way longer... I promise if I remember that I missed anything in this post I'll post another soon.

Oh... Juno nomination... Boom Dejardins? Michael Buble!! JANN ARDEN!!! Kalan Porter!!! WHA HAPPENED!!??? I was so pumped to hear it I almost peed my pants. How did I get here?? I feel like I'm... Awake in a Dream... okay that was cheesy. But I'm super stoked to go to Halifax. I can't wait to see K Dog... I haven't had a chance to catch up with him in so long. It's going to be so much fun.

My friend Kelly gets to be my date for the Junos because he's back in Halifax now, so I'll have a partner in crime...

I'll keep better posts up I promise!! Once the journal entries get figured out it'll be so much easier!

Be well my darlings... Take care of yourselves in the last few months of winter. IF it's cold, wear a touque. Don't forget to wear your parka... and if it's icy GO SLOW... classic words from my mother's mouth before I go ANYWHERE... even Mexico.

Love to you all... especially to whoever made the hilarious chickens climbing up the ladder emoticon!! I just can't shake that tune can I? Man that's FUNNY STUFF... i laughed out loud!

Hey there y’all. Hope everyone is fairing well in the bleak mid winter. I’ve been in Saskatoon chillin’ in the icy town for a week now. It’s been so nice to be home. I had three wisdom teeth yanked last Tuesday so I’ve been layin’ pretty low. I’m sad to say I missed a few good shows that came through. Tsk tsk. The holes in my gums are healing nicely and the bruising has faded to a mellow yellow, so I think I’m all cleared up from the extraction.

I’m off to Halifax in a couple of days. Really looking forward to the Junos. My friend April designed and sewed this beautiful dress for me to wear. She’s such a crafty little cat. I can’t wait to show it off. It’s so special to wear something that was created just for you. Now I just have to find some shoes I won’t bail in.

Album number two is well on it’s way. I’ve been posting messages on the fan forums about how it’s been going, but I’ll journalize it. I worked for almost the whole month of February in Vancouver with two producers, John Collins and David Carswell. They’ve produced quite a few bands from out west and I’ve admired their sounds for quite sometime. (if you haven’t heard Destroyer’s new album, “Destroyer’s Rubies” you’re missing out.) They’ve produced a lot of Tegan and Sara’s albums as well. The last one, “So Jealous” is fabulous. Anyways… worked with them and my band in Van City for a while. My band drove with me to Van for two days at the beginning of February to lay down the bed tracks for 8 songs and then drove home. It was such a great experience. We recorded most of the album at the Factory, a studio in Vancouver, in the company of a wonderful engineer named Sheldon Zaharko, but most of the vocals were done on Galiano Island… at a “cottage.” I kept on thinking it would be a total dirthole… and have no running water or something… but it turned out to be nicer than my house. WAY NICER!! I sang my heart out every day to the beautiful scenery in front of me. I really can’t put into words how inspiring it was. Then we took it back to Vancouver and rough mixed it in three days and I flew home to do some laundry.

I flew to Toronto at the end of February to begin working with Mike Timmins (Cowboy Junkies) for the second half of the album. This was recorded with session musicians from different places in Ontario. It was all “live off the floor”, meaning all of the instruments, even the vocals on some songs were happening at the exact same time. It was recorded on 2 inch tape as opposed to the other recordings out west, which were digitally recorded. Two inch tape is where it’s at. I couldn’t believe the depth and warmth of the recordings. Mike Timmins is really an incredible musician with a great set of ears. It was the most challenging recording of my life because I was really quite nervous about playing with such amazing players, but all the worry and stress was totally worth it. The eight songs we recorded in Toronto were magical. Joe Dunphy at Monumental Sound was the name of the engineer and recording studio. It sure was cool times. I was floored at how good all of the session dudes were. It’s so cool to play with people that “specialize.” I remember writing an essay back in college for one of my music courses about the specializing and generalizing your talents… and which was better… Playing with such great players made me want to get better. I feel the need to practice more. There’s so much to learn.

I flew straight to Winnipeg after the Toronto recordings and got those three teeth lifted and flew to Saskatoon that day so I could sleep in my own bed That pretty much brings me up to the present. I’m just maxin’ and relaxin’ in snowy Saskatoon awaiting my departure next week for Halifax.

Jason Collett is playing at Amigo’s tonight and another band called Wintersleep at Louis’. I have no idea what I’m going to choose. Eileen Laverty CD release Saturday at the Broadway Theatre (March 25th) Music music music… running through my veins.

Jaco is showing me his butt right now. I supposed it’s his contribution to the journal entry. It seems he can’t quite go unnoticed when I write these things.

I’m still getting over the lack of a music store 5 blocks from my house… and I was walking down Broadway the other day and saw that Mr. Ed’s Music store on Broadway that was right next to H.E.L Music has moved downtown. What has happened to precious Saskatoon? I’m thinking of opening a music store here in my old age. I’ll call it… wait for it… Empire Records. That’s totally not taken…

Theresa Sokyrka's second album, Something Is Expected, is all about her.

She wrote the songs. She paid for the record. She picked the producers. And she wouldn't have had it any other way.

"This is the album of my life," says Sokyrka. "If this one doesn't work, I quit." The quitting part is wry melodrama from the personable 25-year-old, but the first half of the statement is entirely true. All of Sokyrka's adult life has led naturally to Something Is Expected.

The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native's late teens and early 20s were spent flirting with folk bands and attending Red Deer College for music. Her breakthrough, however, came when she placed second in season two of Canadian Idol and subsequently released the album These Old Charms in 2005. Charms' jazz standards and covers earned her a 2006 Juno Award nomination for best pop album, going gold in Canada and selling over 70,000 copies as Sokyrka rode a firm wave of Idol momentum. That was just part of the plan, though. "I just wanted to make enough money off my first album so I could put out my album," she emphasizes. "This one."

"Her" album represents the perfect progression from Idol contender to stand alone artist. Something Is Expected is a rich, earthy collection of heartfelt songs that swirl between infectious indie pop, sweet ballads and gossamer dirges, admirably nestling the album alongside anything Sarah Harmer or Tegan And Sara has recorded.

That sound didn't come by accident, either. Recorded in Toronto and Vancouver, Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies fame and respected studio duo JC/DC John Collins (New Pornographers, The Evaporators) and David Carswell (The Evapoators) were enlisted to split the album's production duties.

Timmins introduced Sokyrka to live-off-the-floor analogue recording ("I dont think Ill ever go back to digital. I really love the sound.") and surrounded her with a crack team of players. Timmins played guitar, Richard Bell (The Band, Janis Joplin) was on keys, Jeff Bird (Cowboy Junkies, Tamarack) was on bass, and Randall Coryell drummed.

"Mike hooked me up with a lot of wicked studio musicians," says Sokyrka. "They could play circles around anyone I've ever met really, anyone my age or anyone I've ever played with."

A huge fan of the west coast's vibrant indie pop scene, Sokyrka desperately wanted the Pornographers pair to contribute.

"They were my number one priority on the producer list. I adored Destroyer and I adored Tegan And Sara and I adore the New Pornographers and I adore AC Newman. I love all that music. I love it all and I love the production quality," says Sokyrka, of the albums and artists JC/DC have shepherded.

What JC/DC and Timmins ended up contributing to were confessional, personal songs that encompass Sokyrka's rollercoaster ride through life these past few years.

For example, the willowy "Without Waking" takes a very in-the-moment scenario and lays bare all Sokyrka's fears and insecurities.

"This is my favourite tune on the album and definitely the one I feel most close to," she says. "Its definitely the closest to my heart."

Equally telling, "Yours Is Yours" is a withering observation of someone close to her.

"I wrote that song specifically about takers," says Sokyrka. "Sometimes theres a realization that with certain people in your life that no matter how much you wish they would change, thats never going to happen."

Another song, "Enemy," firmly puts into perspective her feelings about the machinery of musical stardom.

"Its all about the business and the stress of the business," she says. "I was told once that I wasnt marketable. Im not marketable with a major label, its true its because Im not willing to show tits and ass."

Sokyrka needn't worry about such things, though. The realness of Something Is Expected shines loud and clear. Which is exactly what Sokyrka was aiming for.

There's a touch of irony in the title of Theresa Sokyrka's second album. Something is Expected is a record that many of her fans won't expect at all.

"The songwriting will surprise people,'' Sokyrka predicted.

The album, out Tuesday, is almost exclusively of originals, "a rich, earthy collection of heartfelt songs that swirl between infectious indie pop, sweet ballads and gossamer dirges, admirably nestling the album alongside anything Sarah Harmer or Tegan And Sara has recorded,'' says Sokyrka's label Maple Music.

Gone are the covers of Cruisin,' Summertime and Good Mother that helped propel Sokyrka to her second- place fi nish in Canadian Idol in 2004. Sokyrka says she loves her Idol fans but hopes they understand that she has to grow as an artist.

"Hopefully, people won't hate the music and hate me,'' she jokes. "I think I probably will disappoint people but it's not my intention to do that." Sokyrka intends to have a decades-long career in the music business. In a way, it starts now.

"I really do believe this is a new beginning. This is, in my mind, my fi rst album.'' Sokyrka paid the bills and picked the producers for the project. She got Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies for the mellow tunes. Timmins recorded in vintage analogue fashion with two-inch tape, liveoff- the-fl oor -- recording the drums and the vocals at the same time, for instance.

"Everything is so real and right there,'' says Sokyrka. "It's the way I always wanted to record.

It's the way music should be.'' For the rocky-poppy stuff, she went with the duo JC/DC -- John Collins (New Pornographers, The Evaporators) and David Carswell (The Evaporators).

"The album sounds good. It sounds professional.

I could never make an album like this in my basement, no how, no way." The results are exactly what Sokyrka hoped for.

"It's my baby. It's the album I always wanted to make.'' Something Is Expected is the result of something unexpected -- selling 70,000 copies of her fi rst album, These Old Charms, which was recorded in a hurry and on the cheap. Though it received very little radio play, it was a commercial success and earned a Juno nomination.

"It went so well I still can't believe it,'' Sokyrka says. The proceeds allowed her not only to fund the new album but to make a down payment on a house in Saskatoon.

Sokyrka recently shot the video for the fi rst single, Waiting Song. She was taken aback by being the centre of attention on the shoot, which was in Toronto.

"It just feels so Hollywood. You're the most important thing. Everyone is trying to get the right lighting and everyone is trying to get the right smoke.

"It was so much fun. I was so nervous about it.

But it was kind of one of the coolest things I've ever done." Sokyrka hopes to tour nationally in October with the possibility of shows in Los Angeles, New York and the UK.
