Citation : For Miss Melissa
My dear girl,
Who knows when you will get this, if you will hear about it, or if this is how I just try to reach out to you but I have a few things to say to you.
Two years ago, I had the pleasure of being brought onto the Pearson staff for four months for my final practicum - it was my radical induction into the world of high school as a younger teacher. The first time I really encountered you is when you came into an "I Feel Pretty" choreography session. Yes, I had seen you in class, but this was the first time we spoke and I instantly admired the strength, determination and enthusiasm you had when it came to the stage. Though you had your moments with dance (I seem to recall you saying no really, don't make me do this), but you had flair and presence - attitude and performance that I had never seen in someone so young.
When you sang - I got goosebumps, when you smiled - I couldn't help but smile back. You never argued or fought and you always persevered. When you performed the matinee for the grade ten English classes, I couldn't help but think you were the next big thing. I had the pleasure of working with you during those four months and I am blessed to know you. A heart of gold with no strings attached is rare. When I left Pearson I never forgot you and when I returned to watch you in December, seeing you again and the hug and the excitement overwhelmed me for I was only your student teacher - I never thought that I had left a mark on your life - even though I knew you had left one on mine.
When you started to sing your role in December, I the woose of all wooses, skipped the goosebumps and went straight to the tears. You're powerful, you're beautiful (inside and out) and most importantly, you are genuine.
Even if Canada chooses someone else, you are an idol to so many people, YOU touch lives. You have kids that love you because you love them. You infuse engery into the people that surround you.
I am so proud to have taught you and proud to say that I know you as a strong young woman. May you continue to grow and may audiences love you as much as I do. You are my idol and my inspiration.
Always in my heart kido,
Miss Hutton
