Citation :Ashley Leitao looks forward with gratitude
Happy, excited, thankful and blessed. That's how Ashley Leitao felt after winning over viewers and triumphing over fellow Canadian Idol hopefuls to make it to the Top 10 finals.
However, reaching base camp of the Idol summit doesn't always mean joy and glory. The journey can also bring a tinge of sadness as others from Team Idol fail to move on.
"Something inside me is sad because the friends I've made along the way are gone," says Leitao, who reminds herself to always be grateful, especially for having been chosen by the public from among a talented company of singers in Top 32's Group One.
The Burnaby, B.C. resident seemed to be in a state of disbelief after host Ben Mulroney announced live on Wednesday night that the 18-year-old would be joining Daryl Brunt in the exclusive club.
Leitao says she agreed with the judges who thought her performance of Colors of the Wind the previous night didn't show off her true potential, despite Zack Werner's glowing comments.
"I thought I could do a better job," she says after having watched her taped performance. "But I'm the type of person whose nerves really get to me and that's something I have to learn in this competition and I have to kick it out of the bag."
With the Top 10 shows only a few weeks away, the self-confessed jeans fanatic probably won't have time for shifts at her retail job. In fact, Leitao's already thinking of all the preparation she'll need to do to be in tip-top shape for this summer's showdown.
"I need to exercise my voice. I need to learn how to get rid of the nerves and stop psychologically doubting myself and just start thinking positively," she says. "I'm so looking forward to it."
And there's no doubt that right by Leitao's side, you'll find her mom, guiding the hopeful on her unpredictable quest for stardom. Even when she drives her mom crazy, like the night before the results show, during which Leitao tossed, turned and cried, mom was ever-present.
"She's my everything. She's my backbone," says the proud daughter.
As for what she'll bring to the Top 10 stage, Leitao just wants to give it her all and prove to the judges what she's capable of.
"I really want to sing something that will be driving, something that will get the audience in, something that I will just enjoy on stage, something that I will have fun with, something that everyone can enjoy."
