Eye on Idol
Anyone who saw the look of sheer angst on Eva Avila's face the night Chad Doucette was eliminated may have already guessed, but today the Canadian Idol finalists made it official: they are indeed a couple.
In an interview with CTV Newsnet's Kate Wheeler, 19-year-old Avila disclosed Tuesday she has fallen in love with the 18-year-old Nova Scotian, who ended his run on the show at Top 4.
The admission put to rest weeks of rumours circulating on the various fan-driven web sites, including the Canadian Idol Forums, regarding whether or not the duo was an item.
"We're really happy to have found each other," Avila said. "It's really an amazing thing and now we don't mind talking about it since it's the end of the competition. We wanted to focus on the competition first."
Later that day, Avila came clean to CTV's eTalk, telling host Ben Mulroney (also the ringleader on Canadian Idol) that she and Doucette have been together for about three weeks but she had been interested in him well before their hook-up.
"I didn't know what to expect and I didn't think it was mutual," she said. "This whole Canadian Idol adventure has been just so amazing, so this is really like a bonus."
Back in Toronto to work with the Top 10 preparing for Sunday's finale, Doucette said he never thought he would end up with a girlfriend like Avila.
"It was very overwhelming," he told eTalk. "I was just so happy and so thrilled she could feel that way for me."
Avila says she's thrilled to have her man back in town (he was seen cheering her on from the audience during Monday night's show), even if he's only been just over a week since he left. Both say they plan to take things slow and see how the relationship works once they're finished the competition and back in the real world.
While their blossoming romance will surely be followed by Idol fans aplenty, Eva and Chad aren't the first couple to hook up on the show -- last year's winner and runner-up, Melissa O'Neil and Rex Goudie, made their relationship public six months after Season 3 came to a close.
