Some of the dance world's most renowned choreographers will share their expertise with the Top 20 dancers in the first two-hour performance episode of So You Think You Can Dance Canada tonight Wednesday, October 8 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CTV (visit CTV.ca to confirm local broadcast times).
The episode will reveal the Top 20 couple pairings, who their choreographers will be, and what style of dance they will be taking on in Week One. Immediately following the conclusion of the broadcast in each region across the country, a two-hour voting window begins.
An encore broadcast of the first performance episode airs Sunday, October 12 at 9 p.m. ET on MuchMusic.
Specializing in dance styles from Ballroom to Hip-Hop, Disco and Contemporary, this week's choreographers have worked with some of the world's best dancers, including Jennifer Lopez, Janet and Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna and more.
Below is a list of biographies for this week's So You Think You Can Dance Canada choreographers . Choreographers for subsequent weeks will be announced as the competition continues.
Paul Becker
Victoria's Paul Becker is not only a choreographer, but a writer, director, stuntman, actor, editor and true visionary. In the past two years, Paul has made a pop culture name for himself as the head choreographer for the Jonas Brothers. He has worked on over 50 film and TV projects including The Muppets Letters to Santa, College Road Trip, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus "Best of Both Worlds" 3D (Jonas Brothers choreographer), Hot Rod and more; Paul was also the staff choreographer for Showtime's Masters of Horror and Aliens in America.
Sean Cheesman
Calgary native Sean Cheesman is an internationally-renowned director/choreographer who has worked with some of the world's top entertainers, including Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, TLC, Prince, Vanessa Williams, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Queen Latifah, and Britney Spears. Cheesman has toured with Janet Jackson as a choreographer and dancer and subsequently choreographed tours for Prince. Cheesman appeared in and choreographed the film The Bodyguard and most recently was the host and lead judge of the U.K. television series Dirty Dancing: Time of Your Life. Sean just completed choreographing the largest stage revue show in Berlin, Germany.
Clarence Ford
Born and raised in Toronto, Clarence Ford is one of Canada's top choreographers, directors and filmmakers, Clarence Ford's unique vision has led him to choreograph 60 commercials, over 10 films and live events including the latest Cirque du Soleil creation KOOZA, The 94th Grey Cup with Lenny Kravitz and The JUNO Awards. Clarence also choreographs figure skating specials and medal-winning routines for world renowned skaters. His film credits include The Tuxedo, Billy Madison, How To Deal, Gossip, Undercover Brother and The Ladies Man.
Tanisha Scott
Toronto's Tanisha Scott has worked with some of the biggest and brightest in the music industry, and shows no signs of slowing down. Despite having no formal training, Tanisha became a member of Luther Brown's Do Dat entertainment, and soon began touring with Shaggy, dancing in videos for Aaliyah and working with Mary J. Blige. Tanisha has choreographed videos for Sean Paul, Eve, Beyoncé, the Pussy Cat Dolls and Jay-Z. Tanisha has danced in over 40 videos and has been nominated five times for best choreographer at the MTV Video Music Awards. Tanisha's most recent projects include Alicia Keys' As I Am Tour, and the upcoming Notorious B.I.G biopic Notorious.
Stacey Tookey (Stacey Jimenez)
Dance teacher and choreographer Stacey Tookey has had a diverse dancing career. The Edmonton native has represented her country at the Royal Academy of Dance's prestigious Adeline Genee ballet awards in London. Stacey has worked on projects with Bette Midler and Madonna and has performed as a member of So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Mia Michael's dance company RAW. Stacey also performed throughout the entire five-year run of Celine Dion's Caesars Palace show A New Day and appeared with Celine on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The 2004 World Music Awards and more.
Gustavo Vargas
Houston native Gustavo Vargas has been dancing and choreographing professionally for 10 years. Having danced, choreographed, and toured with artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Will Smith, Usher, N'Sync and more, Gustavo has also worked on several television series, including Dancing With The Stars, America's Best Dance Crew and Janet Jackson MTV-Icon. Gustavo has also worked on movies such as Be Cool, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, Spanglish, The Master of Disguise, Along Came Polly, Jackass II, Rent and Indiana Jones.
Melissa Williams
Melissa Williams is one of the most innovative choreographers working in the entertainment industry today. Born and raised in Windsor, Melissa has worked with actors and directors in the industry, including Prince, George Michael, Bryan Adams, Michael Caine, Randy Quaid, Carmen Electra, David LaChapelle, and more. Over the past few years Melissa Williams and her company, DM Creative, have choreographed and musically staged live productions around the world including Grease The Musical, HAIR The Musical and STORM. Williams has also choreographed and performed in television and feature films including Hairspray, American Pie, Batman & Robin, That Thing You Do!, Showgirls and The Tonight Show.
Amy Wright
Born in Simcoe, Ontario, Amy Wright is one of Canada's most in-demand choreographers.Her choreography work was featured in films such as Rock My World, with Peter O'Toole, Joan Plowright and Alicia Silverstone, and A Home At The End of The World with Sissy Spacek and Colin Farrell. Amy's upcoming work includes choreography in the feature films In Grey Gardens with Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange and The Time Traveler's Wife with Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams.
